Dear Ms.
Hutten,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I'm writing to you on behalf of Jon Sharfman from SAHRA's
Maritime and Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit regarding the
Field School we will be hosting in January.

In a nutshell, the Field School is the culmination of the
first phase of the Unit's Maritime Archaeology Development
Program (MADP). We have been conducting training for students,
industry insiders and private individuals for two years, based
on the curriculum developed by the Nautical Archaeological
Society (NAS). As the Program progressed, we have been
focusing the training on students who are interested in
history, archaeology, heritage management and related fields.
Earlier this year, we hosted a Field School in collaboration
with the Robben Island Museum (RIM), the Centre for
International Heritage Activities (CIE) and the University of
Leiden (both from the Netherlands). Building on the success of
that Field School and the lessons learned, we are once again
going to be meeting on Robben Island in January and would like
to invite ASAPA to pass our invitation on to interested
students.

The Field School will run from January 16 - February 5 2012
and is open to all students, divers and non-divers, who have a
background or an interest in archaeology, history and heritage
management. The course will be fully accredited by the NAS and
internationally recognised experts will be facilitating the
various modules, including in-situ and artefact conservation
(Vicki Richards and Jon Carpenter from the Western Australia
Maritime Museum), archival research (Robert Pathesius,
University of Leiden and Director of the CIE) and GIS (Peter
Holt, 3H Consulting, developer of the Site Recorder software).

The students will be grouped according to their interests and
abilities. The land (non-diving) team will be examining
various historically significant sites on Robben Island and
survey the slave / convict gardens to the north of the Island.
The sea (diving) team will be mapping the Barrel Wreck off
Dolphin Beach near Blouberg and excavating test trenches under
the guidance of Jon and Jaco Boshoff from Iziko. The
collaboration between SAHRA and the Iziko Museums also means
that students will have the opportunity to work with various
collections housed at the Museum, including the Birkenhead
Collection. The team will be housed on Robben Island and all
catering expenses will be covered by SAHRA.

We are aware that UCT and other institutions run their own
field schools during this time period and it is an unfortunate
clash, but the timing was dictated by weather since Jan/Feb is
the best time of year for diving in Table Bay and a quiet time
for RIM. Students are welcome to participate for as long or as
short as they are able, to fit in with other commitments.

Attached is an invitation we have put together for students.
We would be most grateful if you could circulate it to ASAPA
members so that they may pass it on to students whom they
think may be interested.

This has turned out to be a much longer message than I
intended, I hope I have covered all the relevant points. If
you have any questions or would like more detail about the
MADP or the Field School, please let me know.

Thank you for your consideration, and kind regards,
