<p class="MsoNormal">We are now coming towards the end of 2013 so a big thank you to everybody who was able to participate in the training we conducted during this past year. Lots of great discoveries were made and finally getting a true picture of what and
where the Church of St John in the Marsh survived was a fantastic result. <u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">So, it is only appropriate that we send out an update for what will be happening in 2014. <u></u><u></u></p>
</div>

<p class="MsoNormal"><i><span style="font-size:7.5pt">This is a preview as to what will be coming up, we have yet to get confirmation regarding advertising and such like, so obviously some details may change when the web pages go live.</span></i><u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Site </b><u></u><u></u></p>
</div>

<p class="MsoNormal">After exhausting all the currently available options for work on the Hungate site we will be moving. This is quite a big move as it is across onto the other side of the River Ouse, this part of the city where we have not previously had
an Archaeology Live! site.<u></u><u></u></p>
</div>

<p class="MsoNormal"><u></u> <u></u></p>
</div>

<p class="MsoNormal">Where we will be digging is beneath a former Boxing Club, Mortuary Chapel, Graveyard, Rectory, Church Lane etc. linked with All Saints Church, North Street, York (<a href="http://allsaints-northstreet.org.uk/index.html" target="_blank">http://allsaints-northstreet.org.uk/index.html</a>).
The site is immediately adjacent to the northwest side of the church and has already shown to have a complex sequence of deposits which date from the Roman period onward. It has the potential for a range of features and finds that reflects this long history
and nearby excavations have proven to be extremely rewarding. We will be working in partnership with the team at the church on the project so will have access to some of their facilities, as well as their input and knowledge when we are working on the project.<u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">So amazing potential, and plenty of time & support for us to really have a good look at the archaeology. It will also be good for the church as it will allow them the opportunity to expand their already extensive knowledge of the grounds,
tie in with publicity for the visitors they have and also free up the area for any future uses.<u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Format & Dates</b><u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">We are looking at running the same Archaeology Live! structure for training which we have been doing in recent years at Hungate i.e. small groups taught by professional archaeologists, learning by actually doing the archaeology themselves. <u></u><u></u></p>
</div>

<p class="MsoNormal"><u></u> <u></u></p>
</div>

<p class="MsoNormal">It is our intention to run the summer session for 12 weeks (Monday to Friday working week) from late June to mid September. In addition to this we hope to be able to offer a two week session in spring (dates tbc) and the same in Autumn
(dates tbc). We will also look at having training weekends throughout the year (dates tbc). There will be courses that run for a single day up to several weeks, depending on what the trainee wants to complete. Basically if there is enough interest we will
run as many courses as possible.<u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Previously we have been able to provided 1 on 1 or similar small groups as 'mentoring' style training. We would like to do this again, but there is obviously a cost implication as we have to be able to cover staff time. So this is another
possible training route.<u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Costs</b><u></u><u></u></p>
</div>

<p class="MsoNormal">These will be similar to those of 2013 at Hungate <a href="http://www.dighungate.com/content.asp?ID=43" target="_blank">http://www.dighungate.com/content.asp?ID=43</a>. Any slight increase will be confirmed when a final budget has been
drawn up, but it will not be of a significant amount.<u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Accommodation</b><u></u><u></u></p>
</div>

<p class="MsoNormal">Our usual provider of accommodation came back with a proposal which was basically a 30% price rise on last year. This was on top of a price rise of nearly 50% two years ago and would basically mean that we would be paying double what we
were paying just a few years before. In real terms trainees would have had to pay £150 per week as a basic rate without any allowance for food/travel etc. Basically that is not really viable for us to pay in advance and also not what we would expect trainees
to pay for - you could get 4 nights in a reasonable place that is central for £150.<u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><u></u> <u></u></p>
</div>

<p class="MsoNormal">So we will be providing an extensive list of options for people to choose from in the way of accommodation. This will have to be booked independently of the training, but will most probably be a lot cheaper than what we would have to charge.<u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">For example you can book single rooms directly with the university at £20 per night (one of the cheapest for single rooms)<u></u><u></u></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">We are happy to start taking reservations for the summer season from people on the contacts list now (so if you have this email you are on the list) - so any of the 12 weeks after the 23rd June 2014. Let us know how many days/weeks (A normal
course is Mon-Fri and taster courses are one or two days Tue-Fri) and I will hold a space for you on the spreadsheet. This means that you can put a note in your diary as well a look at any accommodation options if you require them - A lot of places will do
a good discount if you book well in advance.<u></u><u></u></p>
