<p class="Body1"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Cambria","serif"">This talk will highlight the ways that Dr. Johnson’s theorizing and qualitative inquiry bring attention to power relations between dominant (white, male, heterosexual, etc.) and marginalized
populations in the context of leisure. The privileging and discriminatory practices that occur in contemporary leisure and recreation settings are explored as he discusses the ways his advocacy, activism, civic-engagement, service-learning and community partnerships
create unique learning opportunities for individuals and institutions. One of the outcomes of this theory to practice approach resulted in two documentaries,
<i>“be there for me”: collective memories of LGBTQ youth in high school</i>, and <i>
“We exist”: collective memories of transgender, queer and questioning youth</i>, which have been distributed with a resource binder to +900 schools in the state of Georgia. Selected as one of the top ten educators in Georgia working for equality by the Georgia
LGBT Pride Committee he received the MLK Jr. Achieving the Dream award for his efforts to make society more just.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="Body1"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Cambria","serif"">Dr. Corey W. Johnson is the Associate Department Head in Counseling and Human Development Services and coordinates the Recreation and Leisure Studies Program. An affiliate faculty
member with the Qualitative Research Program and the Institute for Women’s Studies, he teaches courses in leisure history and philosophy, social and contemporary issues in leisure services, research methods, event management and experiential education.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
