His talk, ?The Social Contract, Violence, and Succession in Achebe?s Novels of Colonization,?</span><span style="font-size:10.5pt;color:black">
</span><span style="color:black">argues that while</span><span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:black">
</span><span style="color:#1A1A1A">Achebe's novels of colonization are usually read as versions of what happened in the past, at the moment of colonization in Africa, the novels were written just before and just after Nigerian independence in 1960, and as such
they reflect present concerns. In particular, they think through what it means to inherit state sovereignty from the colonizer. In other words, the novels are more about political philosophy than about history, about the nature of law and the state than about
cultural crisis. They ask about the understanding of violence and how to limit it, and the capacity of the colonized to take over the state from the colonizer.</span><span style="font-size:10.5pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:black">
