<span lang="EN" style="font-size:12.0pt;mso-fareast-language:DE">BICC’s Interactive Guide on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW),
</span><span style="font-size:12.0pt">initially being developed as a German contribution to the
<em><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">UN Programme of Action (PoA) to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects,
</span></em></span><span lang="EN" style="font-size:12.0pt;mso-fareast-language:DE">is an open accessible multi- language database on small arms and light weapons. Among other things, the Guide aims to answer questions like what types of small arms and light
weapons can be found in which countries; where and which types of small arms are produced by which country; and how to distinguish different categories and even types of small arms and light weapons from one another.

<p style="text-align:justify"><b><span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">GMI – The Global Militarization Index<o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;text-align:justify">
<span lang="EN" style="font-size:12.0pt;mso-fareast-language:DE">With its Global Militarization Index (GMI), BICC is able to objectively depict worldwide militarization for the first time. The GMI compares, for example, a country’s military expenditure with
its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and its health expenditure. It contrasts the total number of military and paramilitary forces in a country with the number of physicians. Finally, it studies the number of heavy weapons available to a country’s armed forces.
These and other indicators are used to determine a country’s ranking, which in turn makes it possible to measure the respective level of militarization in comparison to other countries.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p style="text-align:justify"><b><span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Arms Export Database<o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">On this website
</span><span lang="DE" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif"><a href="http://www.bicc.de/" target="_blank"><span lang="EN">BICC</span></a></span><span lang="DE" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">
</span><span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">publishes different data sets concerning the military sector, overall security environment, human rights situation and governance in all together 170 countries. The range of information is supposed
to support, improve and facilitate an evaluation of German arms exports and is therefore based on the criteria spelled out in the European Union’s 2008 Common Position that includes the
</span><span lang="DE" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif"><a href="http://ruestungsexport.info/index.php/eu_ausfuhr"><span lang="EN">EU Code of Conduct on Arms Export</span></a></span><span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif"> (German).
Besides detailed </span><span lang="DE" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif"><a href="http://ruestungsexport.info/index.php/laenderportraits"><span lang="EN">country reports</span></a></span><span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif"> (in
German only) for more than 25 selected recipient states of German arms exports outside of NATO, a large </span><span lang="DE" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif"><a href="http://ruestungsexport.info/index.php/db"><span lang="EN">database</span></a></span><span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">
examines the correspondence of 170 countries to seven evaluation criteria, which are based upon the EU Common Position (2008/944/CFSP) on arms exports.
