<p class="MsoNormal">The number of people arriving in Europe has increased rapidly since the beginning of the civil war in Syria in 2011. In 2015, more than 1 million people fled to Europe: most were trying to escape the civil war in Syria; others came from
conflict and poverty in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Eritrea, and Nigeria, among other countries.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The people arriving have become a political flash point across Europe, causing the open borders of the European Union to be closed, in several cases, and the question of how to respond to the crisis has created tension between and within
the countries of Europe.<o:p></o:p></p>
