Before Donald Trump in 2025, before James Madison in 1812, Benjamin Franklin had designs on Canada. This is the story of how he came to have that desire, how he rationalized it, what he did, and why he failed. It’s a historical saga that begins in Philadelphia,
goes through London, Paris, and Montreal, and ends in disappointment.</div>

<b>Madelaine Drohan</b> is an award-winning author and former foreign correspondent who covered business and politics in Canada, Europe and Africa. She was Canada correspondent for The Economist magazine from 2006 to 2020 and European correspondent for The
Globe and Mail from 1991 to 1999. Her previous book <i>Making a Killing: How and Why Corporations Use Armed Force to Do Business</i> won the Ottawa Book Award.</div>
