Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to let you know that the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center
and at the University of California, Santa Barbara will be hosting an
international conference entitled "Acts of Reconstruction: Shakespeares
Globe," scheduled to take place on May 9 - 10 at the Hatlen Theatre,
Snidecor Hall. The conference will explore a number of themes. First it
will ask why a theatre that dates from the 16th century is being rebuilt
and whether anything close to an accurate reconstruction can actually be
achieved. Secondly, it will explore the artistic, economic, social, and
political factors that lie behind its current reconstruction and make the
Globe a component of contemporary culture. Finally it will view the
contemporary construction of the Globe in a historical perspective,
touching upon previous attempts to reconstruct the Globe, and upon ways in
which Shakespearean performance has, through the ages, both sustained and
deviated from the principles of open-staging that were practiced at the
Globe.

This conference is, in essence, the third of a series, which began
in the Fall of 1995 with our conference "The Pasts We tell Ourselves" and
was continued in the Spring of 1996 with our exploration of the cleaning
of the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. Next year, in the fourth "Acts of
Reconstruction" conference we will be exploring the rebuilding of history
in theme parks and modern city centers.

We have chosen the Globe Theatre as this year's topic to coincide with the
opening of the first full season in the theatre. Speakers include Andrew
Gurr (University of Reading), the theatre historian upon whose research
the present Globe was constructed, Michael Holden, the Executive Director
of the International Shakespeare Globe Centre in London, Thomas Postlewait
(Ohio State University), a leading theorist of theatre history, Jean
Marsden (University of Connecticut), a historian of Shakespearean
performance, William Worthen (UC Davis), an expert in the history of
modern staging, and Dennis Kennedy (Trinity College, Dublin), the director
of the Samuel Beckett Centre in Dublin and a noted scholar on the
international performance of Shakespeare. Round-table panels will include
contributions from several of the most eminent Shakespearean scholars and
performers at UCSB and in the University of California system. The
conference will be held in conjunction with a performance of "The Winters
Tale" by A Noise Within, on May 8-9 at Campbell Hall, UCSB.

We would like to invite the members of the American Society of Theatre
Research to attend our conference on the Globe. Would it be possible for
you to provide us with a copy of the 1977 Membership List on disk? For
us, the ideal format would be Microsoft Word, but we are also capable of
printing out a Mac file. If that is not possible, would you please send
us the membership on address labels?

Lastly, we would appreciate your help in publicizing this event as widely
as possible. Could you recommend any theatre websites, discussion lists,
or publications in which we might announce this event?

With all best wishes

Leonard Wallock, Associate Director
