The Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta invites applications and
nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Drama. This
tenured appointment will be made at the rank of Professor, effective 1 July,
1998. The floor of the salary scale for the rank of Professor for the
1998/1999 academic years is $62,840.

The Department is currently advertising vacancies in the following areas:
Acting / Directing, Theory and History of Drama, Voice and Speech. While we
are not committed to hire as a Chair a scholar who works in one of these
areas, such a specialization would be an advantage. We urge all interested
candidates with academic qualifications in Drama to apply.

The Department of Drama offers academic programs leading to BA, BA Honors
and MA degrees and conservatory programs leading to BFA degrees in Acting,
Theatre Design and Technical Theatre, and MFA degrees in Directing and
Theatre Design. Graduates from all programs have identifiable records of
acheievement on a national scale.

The Departments facilities are: the Fine Arts Building, with 4 performance
spaces for Drama; the Timms Centre for the Arts, a state of the art teaching
centre opened in 1995 which contains a 300 seat proscenium stage, flexible
playing stage and full production workshops. The candidate should have a
PhD or MFA or the equivalent in professional theatre experience.

The Faculty of Arts is engaged in an extensive process of renewal, and is
committed to ensuring that the substantial number of hirings anticipated
over the next several years will secure for the future the lively and
productive intellectual environment on which it prides itself. The Chair of
Drama will play a leading role in the renewal process in the Department.

The University of Alberta is committed to the principle of equity in
employment. As employers we welcome diversity in the workplace and
encourage applications from all qualified women and men including Aboriginal
peoples, persons with disabilities and members of visible minorities.
