JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

The University of Alberta, Department of Drama
invites applications for a tenure-track appointment

Applicants are invited for a full-time tenure-track appointment at the
Assistant Professor level.  The successful applicant will have scholarly
expertise in two or more of the following:  Dramatic Literature and
Criticism, Theatre History, Dramaturgy, and Dramatic/Theatrical Theory.
Background which includes indigenous and other non-European theatre could
be an advantage. Candidates should have a completed PhD and evidence of
publication, as well as being actively engaged in research.  The successful
applicant will focus primarily on teaching in the BA, BA(Honours), and MA
Drama programs, and will be expected to teach courses which integrate
dramatic text with its performative aspects.  As these programs combine the
artistic and scholarly strengths of a diverse faculty, the successful
applicant will be asked to share teaching strategies in a collegial
atmosphere, and work with other Department members on the development of
curriculum that addresses the needs of todayĆ­s students. An ability to
contribute to new play development would be an asset. The successful
applicant will teach and supervise students at the undergraduate and
graduate levels, including Honours Essays and MA theses. Faculty are also
required to engage in research and to assume appropriate administrative
responsibilities.

The Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta is engaged in an extensive
process of renewal, and is committed to ensuring that the substantial
number of hirings anticipated over the next several years will reinforce
the lively and productive intellectual environment on which it prides
itself.

The Department of Drama offers academic programs leading to BA,
BA(Honours), and MA degrees, as well as conservatory programs leading to
BFA degrees in Acting, Theatre Design, and Technical Theatre, and MFA
degrees in Directing and Theatre Design.  Graduates from all programs have
identifiable records of achievement on a national scale.

Facilities
The Fine Arts Building, with four performances spaces for drama, was
designed specifically for the teaching of theatre arts, music, and visual
arts.  The Timms Centre for the Arts, a separate and highly acclaimed
theatre complex which opened in March 1995, contains a 300-seat proscenium
stage, a flexible playing space, a green room, dressing rooms, and
workshops for scene construction, properties, and costumes.

The appointment is effective July 1, 1998.  The appointment will be at the
floor of the Assistant Professor level (1997/98, $39,490). This position is
dependent upon appropriate funding.
