Thought this would be of interest to those who have been considering the
role of government in development and support of theatre in Canada.

Be warned, it is rather long. The schedule for the commitee's "tour" is
found at the end. Also, I apologize for the format. If you have trouble
deciphering the information, the homepage from whence this was clipped
can be found at:

                                NEWS RELEASE

   For Immediate Release

Ottawa, January 8, 1999 -- The House of Commons Standing Committee on
Canadian Heritage will conduct hearings across Canada on its study of
the federal governments evolving role in support of Canadian culture
in the context of a rapidly changing national and international
environment. "The Committee's approach continues to be guided by the
need to obtain a broad perspective on the development of a cultural
policy," said the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, M.P. for Lac Saint-Louis.
"To this end, the Committee wishes to consult Canadians to obtain
their views from a local and regional as well as a national
   perspective", said Mr. Lincoln.

The Committee will seek answers to the five key questions arising from
   the work of the Committee:

    1. From the range of federal cultural support measures currently in
place, or used in the past, which ones worked well in your sector
or industry and which did not?
    2. What are the major impacts of new technologies on your cultural
sector or industry? What are they expected to be in the future?
    3. What are the major impacts of trade liberalization and
globalization on your cultural sector or industry? What are they
expected to be in the future?
    4. What are the major impacts of changing demographics on your
cultural sector or industry? What are they expected to be in the
       future?
    5. What roles should the federal government perform in the future to
support the cultural sector or industries? For example, should the
federal government continue to exercise its role as a legislator,
regulator, owner and operator of national institutions funding
partner, patron of the arts, business developer and promoter? Are
there other roles that it should consider playing?

Attached are the cities and proposed travel dates for the Committee.
Those individuals wishing to appear are asked to identify their areas
of interest and indicate their preference regarding the format of the
meeting (form attached). Please contact the Clerks by January 29,
1999. Written briefs will also be accepted.
