Hello All

Wasn't that a nice little ('net) scare Toronto gave us this week. You can
just imagine the curmudgeons screaming, "See! See!" and rushing back to
their quills. But two articles in this week's local papers need to be
reminded to people: "Get online or perish, CEO's told" (Montreal Gazette,
July 16) and "4.3 million households are using communication by computer; up
25% from 1997" (La Presse, July 16).

On this note THE NATIONAL THEATRE CALENDAR AND REGISTRY (let's call it
NATHCARE) is up! (See New Features, below.) The Calendar required the
creation of 128 new pages and the verification of 2400 links. Yikes!

My call for material on the Shaw Festival gave huge dividends this week. As
it turns out, the Shaw itself has vastly improved its web site (it was
pretty sad before) and it is now a goldmine of information, all of which I
can use not only to beef up the Shaw's profile, but also to get the bios I
have been hunting down for years. (If you think your agent is acting on your
behalf when it comes to theatre...think again. In trying to track down
information on many of the people at the Shaw and Stratford, I was usually
blocked by an agent. More money in film and TV...)

Meanwhile don't forget Heavenly Voices for your regional news and job
postings, audition calls or to tell us about your production.

And use the NATHCARE!

New Features:
The National Theatre Calendar and Registry (NATHCARE, a stump compound...a
fancy phrase I just learned). Companies can now register their shows through
to the end of 2000 and receive direct from the Calendar e-mail queries about
their productions. It also keeps companies from logjamming their opening
nights. Come and have a look and spread the word.
(http://www.canadiantheatre.com/calendar/calendarhome.html) If you want to
register, please follow the guidelines
(http://www.canadiantheatre.com/calendar/calendarguidelines.html)

New Profiles:
Arden, Leslie (composer/lyricist)
Phipps, Jennifer (Actor) (http://www.canadiantheatre.com/p/phippsj.html)
Orenstein, Sarah (Actor) (http://www.canadiantheatre.com/o/orensteins.html)
Munro, Neil (director) (http://www.canadiantheatre.com/m/munron.html)
