CANADIAN CULTURES

This issue will explore emerging directions in Canadian culture in the 21st
century. Essays will examine a variety of areas, including the literary and
visual arts, film, theatre and other performing arts,
music, radio and television. Themes to be addressed could include:

· the impact of multiculturalism, globalization and technology on Canadian
culture and cultural policy
· the future of regional cultural expressions
· the relationships between culture and politics, and the future of
government support of the arts and culture (e.g. NAFTA, "Canadianization"
policy and American reactions)
· distinctive Canadian cultural contributions to the world
· pedagogy and Canadian culture
· the symbiosis between Canadian theory and practice in the arts.

The purpose of the issue is to sketch out the possibilities for Canadian
cultures in an increasingly international world, its likely
characteristics, and the contributions it can make to both Canada and to
the world.

Proposals should be submitted by 15 November 1999 to:
