Dear Colleagues,

Thank you for your very useful, very informative suggestions
about Notes.

One pattern is beginning to emerge: 1) many students in high
school, college, and university have not read a single Shakespearean
play (nor, it appears, *The Stone Angel* and similar sorts)
but they have succeeded on their exams. and in their essays by
gorging on Notes; 2) many (some?) directors do NOT read the
'original' Shakespeare play but they have pigged out on Notes;
3) [and this is most speculative but there are some traces of
'soft' evidence to buttress the point]; Some college and university
and high school teachers/Professors have lectured from Notes, with-
out taking even a nano-second at least to look at the 'original'
play.
These strategies (to use a polite euphemism) seem to apply equally
in Canada and the U.S.

Publishing nos. are totalled up to keep track of the business;
so we know exactly how many titles have been prepared and
purchased in a certain span of years and we also know the peak
periods for sales, but I am sure these periods will readily come
to mind.Many Notes have (are?) been written by moonlighting Profs.

SO I THANK ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE SENT ME A NIAGARA OF SUGGESTIONS--
THIS INQUIRY SEEMS TO HAVE TOUCHED A SOFT (SORE?) SPOT. PLEASE
LET YOUR RESPONSES KEEP COMING; I'LL LET YOU KNOW WHEN MY COMPUTER
HAS DROWNED.
THIS HAS TO BE A GENERAL *THANK YOU* TO ONE AND ALL; IF I WERE TO
THANK EACH OF YOU I WOULD BE HERE UNTIL NEXT MILLENIUM. THE FIRST
ONE MADE ME REACH MY LIMIT OF TOLERATION.

******************

THE *UNIVERSITY AFFAIRS* LETTER-OF-CONCERN WILL APPEAR IN THE
MARCH ISSUE AND SHOULD BE MAILED OUT TOWARDS THE END OF FEBRUARY.
AGAIN, THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE WHO GAVE ME SUCH HELPFUL
ADVICE.

"But soft, what light through yonder window breaks?
It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.
Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon."
