CRUCIBLE OF CULTURES :
ANGLOPHONE DRAMA AT THE DAWN
OF A NEW MILLENIUM

International Conference organized by the Department of Germanic and Modern
Languages of the University of Brussels
University of Brussels, May 16-19, 2001

FIRST CIRCULAR AND CALL FOR PAPERS

This three-day conference will seek to explore the new developments that
characterize Anglophone drama at the dawn of the 21st century, at a time
when the label "English" is no longer perceived only as British and American
but also comprises the former colonies of the British Empire. Theatre will
be analyzed in its capacity to translate the many-faceted societal and
aesthetic changes that mark the beginning of the new millenium : how does
Anglophone drama reinscribe the complexities of postmodernism and cultural
pluralism in an age of transition ? A number of scholarly sessions will deal
with British, American and postcolonial theatre and drama. The conference
will have a strong dramaturgical bias and will seek to accommodate papers
crossing the boundaries between text and performance. The conference will
comprise plenary lectures, paper sessions, roundtables and/or
lecture-demonstrations.

Here are some of the topics that might be considered for paper sessions,
roundtables or lecture-demonstrations :

--Drama, performance and the legacy of postmodernism.
--Feminist theatre and drama.
--Political theatre and drama.
--Drama and realism.
--Class, gender, ethnic and cultural diversity in Anglophone drama.
--Drama and Empire.
--Drama and power : new colonialisms.
--Drama and performance studies.
--The role of dramaturgy in articulating new developments.
--Translating/adapting Anglophone drama in francophone countries.
--Producing Anglophone drama in French-speaking countries : the role of
dramaturgy.
