Re: Federal election 2000 -- speaking out for post-secondary education and
university research

The political parties have circulated their platforms widely; the debates
have come and gone. Yet little has been said by the candidates about
funding for post-secondary education, the need to enhance support for
university research, and the vital importance of research, as Canadian
society builds its strengths for the 21st century.

We must attempt to correct this oversight. It is now up to our community to
make sure that candidates across the country hear from us about issues of
funding and research.

Humanities and social sciences scholars have every interest in meeting
their candidates when they come canvassing and at all-candidates meetings.
Each person is urged to take these opportunities and others to raise issues
of concern to our community and to provide examples of ways in which study
and research in the humanities and social sciences have already made Canada
strong. They will continue to do so, and to contribute in a major way to
the public good, as long as they receive the resources and support they need.

A rich source of sound information, regularly updated, on the entire range
of university-related issues is available at the website of the Association
of Universities and Colleges Canada: www.aucc.ca. Some of the issues
addressed on this website are:
* core funding for universities/transfer payments to the provinces
*  accessibility
*  deferred infrastructure maintenance
*  research funding
*  political party platforms

It is urgent that we seize this opportunity to make the voices of the
humanities and social sciences community heard locally and nationally.

Sincerely

Dr Louise Forsyth, President
