The University of Lethbridge Faculty of Fine Arts, Division of Theatre
and Dramatic Arts invites Canadian playwrights to submit previously
unproduced plays for development and production during a six-week summer
theatre company (May 7 to June 20, 2001). The company will workshop,
rehearse, and produce one script, chosen by committee, with shorter
workshops and public readings of up to three additional scripts as
resources permit.

The company is interested in applications from
playwright-director/dramaturge teams, particularly if the playwright has
been working closely with the director/dramaturge during the play’s
development. The director/dramaturge would be responsible for
workshopping and directing the production. If the playwright is unable
to find a director/dramaturge, a director, in consultation with the
playwright, will be hired from the Canadian theatre community.

Although the quality and potential of the script will be of foremost
importance in choosing the successful application, the experience and
abilities of the playwright-director/dramaturge team will be of
significant importance as well. Especially encouraged are applications
from playwrights who have letters of interest from professional
companies, as our intent is to provide a high quality pre-professional
production as a valuable developmental stepping stone to a professional
production. Of particular interest are plays which require a cast of
eight to fourteen.

A company of student actors will be selected, through audition, once the
successful play has been chosen, on or before March 31, 2001.

Plays will be rehearsed and produced in the David Spink’s Theatre, a
black box multi-configurable space with seating for up to 225. A run of
four to six performances is possible, with one to two day
revision/rehearsal periods available between performances.

The successful playwright and director/dramaturge will receive a stipend
of $3,800.00 each (subject to applicable payroll deductions). The
playwright will also receive production royalties at the rate of 10% of
gross box office receipts. The playwright and director/dramaturge will
be responsible for travel and accommodation costs. On-campus
accommodation (not including meals) ranges from $14.75 to $28.23 per
night. Off-campus accommodation is also available.

The playwright’s application should include:

· An unbound copy of the script.
· A detailed resume of the playwright’s writing experience and, if
applicable, teaching experience.
· A detailed resume of the director/dramaturge’s theatre experience and,
if applicable, teaching experience.
· A letter indicating the specific goals of the
playwright-director/dramaturge team.
· Two letters of support from members of the Canadian theatre community
familiar with the playwright’s work.
· Any additional supporting documents.

Deadline for applications is March 5, 2001.

Completed applications should be sent to:
