Canadian playwright John Herbert died in his sleep Friday June 22. He had been ill for over a month as a result of complications resulting from a biopsy for prostate cancer.

Herbert received the Chalmers Award for Best Canadian Play in 1975 for Fortune and Men's Eyes. Based on Herbert's own life experiences, the play dramatizes society's injustice towards gays and the brutalizing effects of imprisonment on gay and straight people alike. Fortune premiered at the famous Actors Studio in New York on February 23, 1967 and subsequently received professional productions in over 100 countries.

Extensive information about John Herbert can be found on his own website http://www.fortuneandmenseyes.com and in the Encyclopedia of Canadian Theatre on the WWW www.canadiantheatre.com See the entries www.canadiantheatre.com/f/fortuneandmenseyes.html and www.canadiantheatre.com/h/herbertj.html

There will be a private family burial on Monday, June 25.
