CALL FOR PAPERS

SHAKESPEARE PERFORMANCE IN THE NEW ASIAS

A conference in Singapore
28-30 June 2002

A forum for connecting and contextualizing the performance of Shakespeare
in East, South, and Southeast Asia. The conference, to take place at the
National University of Singapore, aims to address a) the ways in which the
reproduction of Shakespeare occurs in Asian performance and b) how
Shakespeare's name and work operate in various national theatre histories,
as foreign and global texts, and as sites of intercultural
transaction. The gathering will bring together the perspectives of Asian
and non-Asian scholars of Shakespeare performance, in theatre as well as
film, in a group of papers treating performance issues rather than purely
literary or educational ones.

The meeting will take the form of a workshop with a limited number of
participants, whose papers will be discussed in detail. We anticipate that,
among other possible issues, these will be primary:
· Asian positions and frames for intercultural performance
· Theatre and film histories of Shakespeare in Asia
· The value of Shakespeare as a foreign text in Asia

Plenary speakers are expected to include Rustom BHARUCHA (Calcutta), John
Russell BROWN (London), LI Ruru (Leeds), Ania LOOMBA (Illinois), MINAMI
Ryuta (Kobe), and SHEN Lin (Beijing). A roundtable of directors is also
planned.

Proposals for 20-minute papers are invited. Proposals should be no more
than 500 words long, and submitted by 15 FEBRUARY 2002 by email
simultaneously to:
Professor Dennis KENNEDY <dkennedy at tcd.ie>
Dr YONG Li Lan <ellyll at nus.edu.sg>

Registration: US$100. Reasonably priced accommodation will be
available. Further information: from Dr Yong by email (as above), fax (+65
773 2981), or post (Department of English, FASS, Block AS5, 7 Arts Link,
Singapore 117570). Organizers: Dennis Kennedy (Trinity College
Dublin), John Phillips and Yong Li Lan (National University of Singapore)
