"9 Jakhoo Hill" takes place during Diwali at the address of an aristocratic
family who has seen better times. The time is 1962, post-partition India,
when the country was at war with China, a time of disillusionment and the
shattering of Nehruvian dreams. So, too, at 9 Jakhoo Hill, are dreams being
replaced by realities. With humor and drama, Gurcharan Das writes in a
Chekovian vein about the changing order, the hold of Indian mothers on their
sons, about a fading class clinging foolishly to spent dreams.

Gurcharan Das is the author of "India Unbound," a provocative account of
contemporary India, and a novel, "A Fine Family," which is being adapted for
television. He is also a columnist for the Times of India. His plays have
been performed in many cities in India as well as off-Broadway and at the
Edinburgh Festival. Mr. Das graduated in philosophy from Harvard University
and later attended Harvard Business School where he is featured in three
case studies. He is former CEO of Procter & Gamble India and Vice President
and Managing Director, Strategic Planning, Procter & Gamble Worldwide.

This staged reading on November 7 is part of Rasik Arts efforts to
familiarize the public with dramatic works being produced in India and to
raise the profile of South Asian talent in Toronto. Proceeds will benefit
the ongoing activities of Rasik Arts.
