“When you ask experimental theatre buffs to name the best in American
Theatre, rather than Robert Wilson or the Wooster Group, many will point to
Goat Island”
Time Out, London

This is an opportunity for artists to work and study together in a
structured, creative environment. Performance, installation, writing,
movement, music, research, publication and documentation are examined in
various forms and combinations dictated by participants and instructors

methods of individual and collective expression and creativity.

MIKE PEARSON
www.mikebrookes.com/ambivalence/pearsonbrookes/default.htm

A performative expedition led by Mike Pearson.

In 2001 it was an expeditionary walk across the prehistoric landscape of the
Preselli Mountains, making and filming short choreographies adjacent to
cairns and tombs and stone circles, in business suits and high-heels. In
2002 it was a trip to Ramsey Island and the creation and presentation of
performative maps - even edible ones - of the nature reserve. In 2003 Mike
Pearson once again leads a two-day expedition 'off the beaten track' into
the Welsh countryside, mixing an appreciation of the historical and
environment of the location with collaborative performance activity.
Including a night of eating and drinking and snoring under canvas.

Mike Pearson is Professor of Performance Studies at the University of Wales
Aberystwyth. Throughout the 1970s he was an artistic director of Cardiff
Laboratory Theatre and in the 1980s a director of Welsh theatre company
Brith Gof. He has been working with Mike Brookes since 1997 in the
Pearson/Brookes collective. He is co-author of ‘Theatre/Archaeology’

RICHARD GOUGH & JOAN MILLS
www.thecpr.org.uk/summershift3.htm

Richard Gough and Joan Mills have a shared understanding of the way theatre
inspired by the visual and the vocal can produce work that is elegant and
surprising. In his own creative work as a director, deviser and workshop
leader Richard Gough has developed a particular approach to creating visual,
musical and site-specific performance and is particularly acclaimed for his
work involving food. Joan Mill’s voice workshops introduce enjoyable,
physically based exercises and games to improve breathing, encourage
relaxation, and develop listening skills and confidence.

£160 (CPR Members £145, Bursary £110)

14 – 25 July
GUILLERMO GÓMEZ-PEÑA AND JUAN YBARRA
www.pochanostra.com

What does "radical behaviour" mean in the year 2003? What are the new roles
of artists in the post-9/11 era?

This is a two week project, culminating in two public performances, giving
participants an opportunity to hone their artistic and analytical skills and
explore new radical approaches to collaboration and art making. Aiming to
develop new models of relationship between artist and community; mentor and
apprentice, which are neither colonial nor condescending, establish a
temporary utopian space for aesthetic freedom and cross-cultural dialogue
and to seek a new aesthetic that truly reflects the spirit and tribulations
of our times.

Gómez-Peña’s is widely regarded as one of the most significant performance
artists of the last decade. His work crosses performance art, video, audio,
installations, poetry, journalism, critical writings and cultural theory,
explores cross-cultural issues, immigration, the politics of language,
"extreme culture" and new technologies in the era of globalization.
£295 (CPR Members £265, Bursary £195)

"While I had some idea of the range of the workshops, What I had no idea was
that there would be such a terrific range of age and
nationalities/domiciles/cultures/languages in such a small group, which made
for interesting exchanges and responses. A rather full-circle experience of
research, practice and performance, I enjoyed the full working days and
programmed events in the evenings but also the opportunity to 'socialise' in
the dorms or vent by the ocean with wine and Pizza or takeaway Chinese!"
