THEATRE CONFERENCE

Shifting Tides: Atlantic Canadian Theatre
Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow
University of Toronto

The Graduate Centre for Study of Drama (U of T) is pleased to present,
Shifting
Tides: Atlantic Canadian Theatre – Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow. The
national
conference will take place at the Drama Centre, March 25th – 28th, 2004.

Home to many of Canada’s most celebrated playwrights, theatre
practitioners and
scholars, Atlantic Canada has earned itself national and, increasingly,
international
acclaim for theatrical innovation and artistic excellence. Shifting
Tides: Atlantic
Canadian Theatre – Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow is a national
conference dedicated to exploring the multi-textured and complex
artistic
character of a region that is both the site of the nation’s oldest
theatre and the
space of burgeoning talents, ideas and innovations. By overcoming the
physical,
cultural and disciplinary boundaries between academics, practitioners
and
audiences, this celebration strives to increase the awareness of, and
appreciation
for, the theatre of Atlantic Canada through artistic and intellectual
exchange and
exploration.

Some of the most vital and progressive theatre companies from Canada’s
East
Coast will offer staged performances of their current projects, as well
as hands-on
workshops for conference participants. Atlantic playwrights with
national and
international reputations will read from their works. Papers, panels,
workshops and
performances will deal with an array of issues that span the ongoing
history of
Canadian theatre and breadth of its Atlantic Coast communities.

Chris Brookes (Newfoundland’s Mummers’ Troupe) and Magnetic North
Theatre Festival’s Mary
Vingoe will be delivering the conference keynote addresses.

Plenary presenters include George Belliveau, Helen Peters, Patrick
O’Neill and Glen Nichols.

Artistic presentations will include readings by Wendy Lill, Don Hannah,
Anne Chislet, Jenny Munday,
Bryden MacDonald, Kent Stetson, Charlie Rhindress, Melissa Mullen,
Robert Chafe, Catherine Banks,
Paul Ledoux, and Colleen Wagner.

Workshops and "showcase" performances will be provided by the theatre
companies Artistic Fraud,
Moncton Sable and Zuppa Circus.

Registration: $40/$20 students & seniors. University of Toronto
students Free.
