University of Calgary Faculty of Fine Arts Tier II Canada Research
Chair in Creative Practice & New Technologies

The Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Calgary invites applications
for a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Creative Practice & New Technologies.
The purpose of this Chair is to catalyze collaborative research in the
fields of Fine Arts, Design, and Science.

The University of Calgary celebrates "creativity and innovation in the arts"
as a flagship area of excellence. To ensure its future growth and success,
the University has initiated a number of strategies including: the provision
of new faculty positions; development of new undergraduate and graduate
programs; and a renewal of support for research and teaching in existing
programs.

The successful candidate will interact with colleagues in the area of
creative practice and new technologies, and will add top-level research and
teaching capacity in the Faculty¹s NBC Universal Canada Multimedia Lab,
and/or the new digitally-supported performance laboratory which will open in
2007.

While it is expected that the Chair will have artistic and research
interests in interdisciplinary and technology-informed contexts, the area of
specific disciplinary focus is open. For instance, studio arts, media arts,
digital arts, sound or movement would be considered important and relevant
areas of study in the ongoing exploration and development of identity in an
increasingly technological world.

Within the Faculty of Fine Arts, the Chair has the opportunity to support
and develop research / creation in the context of individual and collective
artistic interactions with a technological environment. This could include
the development and delivery of an expanded digital media program and
participation in new and existing projects, ranging from theatre design to
electroacoustic composition, from 3D modeling to work with time-based media.

The Chair will also contribute to a new research initiative housed in the
Department of Computer Science, bringing together arts and science research
in the domain of interactive technologies. This interdisciplinary initiative
will develop and create projects exploring the aesthetic in digital
interactions around three themes: interactive visualization, embodied
interaction, and transferability.

The appointment may be at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank; all
applicants must be within ten years of award of her/his PhD. Applicants are
to be emerging leaders in their field, developing national and international
scholarly presence, to have an excellent teaching and graduate supervision
record, to have experience with externally-funded programs, and a commitment
to cross-/interdisciplinary and collaborative research. The position comes
with the opportunity for funding through the Canada Foundation for
Innovation (CFI).

All CRC positions are subject to review and final approval by the CRC
Secretariat. Candidates should send their applications, including curriculum
vitae, statement of research objectives, five-year research plan, and
contact information for three eminent referees to:

Dr. Ann E. Calvert
Dean, Faculty of Fine Arts
University of Calgary
CHD 100, 2500 University Drive NW
Calgary, AB T2N 1N4
CANADA

The University will short list candidates as soon as possible after January
31, 2007, but will review and consider applications until the position is
filled.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and
permanent residents will be given priority. The University of Calgary
respects, appreciates, and encourages diversity. To see all University of
Calgary academic positions, please visit www.ucalgary.ca/hr/career

The Faculty of Fine Arts is home to a new digital multimedia lab funded by
NBC Universal Canada, and is participating in the development of a Centre
for Interactive Technologies in conjunction with the Faculty of Science¹s
Department of Computer Science. We expect the CRC appointee to contribute to
the growth and development of these new institutional resources.

The Faculty of Fine Arts is a mainstay of Calgary¹s artistic life. As a
well-established arts education centre, the Faculty has responded to the
community¹s needs in ways only a research university can do. Its creations
are the plays, paintings, sculptures, songs, and dances that enliven and
enrich our city. Its talents and expertise players, artists, directors,
teachers, historians, curators are embodied in the city¹s arts
institutions: our museums, performing companies, galleries, schools, and
theatres are staffed and managed with the more than 3,800 graduates of Fine
Arts.

The Faculty provides programs and leadership to educate students from all
around the world in the practice, history, creation and pedagogy of the
arts. We are known as the epicentre of new artistic work in Calgary, and as
the region¹s key source for contact with artists and experts around the
world of the arts.
