Louise,
I would second that emotion.
It really is appalling how little translation of work from across
borders gets produced in Canada (well certainly in English Canada).
I have directed, in each of the past two years, a new Canadian play in
translation (Italian), at a festival in Florence that every year does
work in translation as well as indigenous work. The audiences there
revel in the ideas and dramaturgy from other countries.
After one performance this year of Brendan Gall's /Alias Godot /(a world
premiere by the way..two years before being done in English back home)/,
/a young couple were so anxious to meet the author (who wasn't there)
and cornered me (I, a happy hostage) for an hour to ask about the
writer, the meaning of his work, his important themes and the general
state of the Toronto theatre scene.
Their questions were so informed by an understanding of international
playmaking, it was embarrassing to me..I found it difficult to imagine a
similar questioning happening back home.
