"Performance Remains, Global Presence: Memory, Legacy, and Imagined Futures"

During its first 25 years, ATHE has played a crucial role in
advancing theatre and performance in higher education in North America. This
year's conference pauses to celebrate ATHE's unique impact and to advance
these conversations in ways that transcend national borders and disciplinary
lines. As we move forward, how can we build on ATHE's strength for bringing
together artists and scholars to better respond to and shape the discipline
of theatre and performance?
· Returning to Chicago, the site of ATHE¹s founding, challenges us to think
about theatre¹s insistence on repetition and presence. Theatre necessarily
exists in the present, but how does this live moment remember the past and
imagine the future? How might we re-imagine the place of performance beyond
boundaries of time and space, nation and discipline, practitioner and
scholar? The 2011 Conference Committee invites proposals that rethink those
boundaries to engage provocatively with questions of memory, legacy and
possibility.
The American Theatre and Drama Society (ATDS) invites
papers/panels that explore concepts of time and presence in American
Theatre. Possible questions of investigation include:
· How has the conceptualization of the "American" in American theatre
changed over time historiographically?
· How have constructed narratives of American theatre by historians and
critics influenced the practice of theatre?
· What are the possibilities for organizations such as ATHE and ATDS for
advancing the conversations about and creation of theatrical practice?
· How do we, as educators, negotiate the spaces between memory, legacy,
and history in American theatre for our students?
· What disciplinary boundaries do scholars of American theatre now
routinely cross and where do obstacles remain? How might we envision new
practices or research methodologies to transcend any lingering barriers?

While the American Theatre and Drama Society encourages the submission of
papers and panels addressing any of these issues, colleagues are welcome to
submit proposals that deal with other engaging topics in American Theatre
(preference will be given to sessions that explore the ATHE 2011 themes). In
addition to the traditional format of papers and panels, ATDS also welcomes
proposals in the form of roundtables, talkbacks, staged readings, virtual
events, etc.

This year¹s conference will feature more multidisciplinary panels than in
past years. Multidisciplinary submissions must be sponsored by a
combination of 2 Focus Groups and 1 Committee or 2 Committees and 1 Focus
Group, or 3 Focus Groups. It is your responsibility to contact each Focus
Group Conference Planner or Committee Chair to be sure that the Focus Groups
and/or Committees are willing to be included.
The goal of these panels is to encourage more varied
multidisciplinary exchanges (as opposed to familiar or recurrent
collaborations) in both content and session format. Creative approaches
include presenting collaborative papers, situating the panel in a
site-specific venue to which participants are asked to respond, or
developing a more interactive session model. For detailed instructions on
multidisciplinary panels, see the ATHE conference site -
http://www.athe.org/conference/sessions

Preference will be given to ATDS members. If you are interested in enjoying
all of the membership benefits of ATDS including your own subscription to
the Journal of American Drama and Theatre please visit the website
(www.atds.org <http://www.atds.org> ) for an application or contact ATDS
Membership Secretary Stuart Hecht (hecht at bc.edu <mailto:hecht at bc.edu> ).

About the American Theatre and Drama Society: The American Theatre and Drama
Society (ATDS) is an incorporated organization dedicated to the study of
United States theatre and drama, its varied histories, traditions,
literatures, and performances within its cultural contexts. ATDS also
encourages the evolving debate exploring national identities and experiences
through research, pedagogy, and practice. ATDS recognizes that notions of
America and the US encompass migrations of peoples and cultures that overlap
and influence one another. To this end, ATDS welcomes scholars, teachers,
and practitioners world-wide.
