Applications are now being accepted for the graduate programs in Theatre at the University of Victoria.


GRADUATE DEGREES
M.A. and Ph.D. in Theatre History (Ph.D. by special arrangement or through Interdisciplinary Studies)  
M.A. and Ph.D. in Applied Theatre (by special arrangement)
M.F.A. in Directing 
M.F.A. in Design
M.F.A. in Production and Management

UVic theatre degrees are highly regarded within the profession and the academy alike. Graduates of all levels of the program occupy top positions at first-rank institutions across the country including the Stratford Festival, the Shaw Festival, the Canada Council, the National Arts Centre, the Banff Centre, Theatre Calgary, Vancouver Opera, Tarragon Theatre, University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, University of Guelph, McMaster, and York University, as well as performing internationally at venues such as the Avignon Festival and Cirque de Soleil. 


SPECIAL STRENGTHS OF OUR PROGRAMS
•	small classes taught by internationally renowned artists and scholars and winners of major Canadian theatre awards; 

•	hands-on use of the Phoenix Theatre, with its annual audience of 10,000 patrons and subscribers;

•	intense one-on-one mentorship by scholars, directors, and designers who work at the finest theatres in the country (Stratford, Shaw, NAC) and at major festivals and conferences around the world (Berlin, Prague, London, New York);

•	strong connections with the profession, both at local companies like the Belfry, Blue Bridge, and Pacific Opera Victoria, and across the country;

•	opportunities to work with distinguished visiting artists and scholars such as Daniel MacIvor, Michael Whitfield, Linda Moore, Alisa Palmer, and Charles Marowitz


STUDY ON THE WEST COAST OF CANADA
The City of Victoria has a long and vibrant theatre heritage, boasting two turn-of-the-century civic theatres, The Royal and McPherson, a professional opera company, Pacific Opera Victoria, and a number of professional theatre companies both large and small: The Belfry, Intrepid Theatre, Theatre SKAM, Atomic Vaudeville, and Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre. Local dance presenter/producer Dance Victoria regularly hosts national and international dance companies in residence and in performance. 

As the capital of British Columbia and home to the Provincial Archives, Victoria is a city rich with opportunities for archival, institutional and architectural research.


FINANCIAL SUPPORT 
•	UVic Fellowships of up to $15,000 per year (master's) and $18,000 per year (PhD)

•	UVic Graduate Awards of up to $10,000 per year (master’s and PhD)

•	Teaching assistantships (TAs) 

•	Numerous other awards are administered through the Faculty of Graduate Studies: www.uvic.ca/grad. 


APPLICATION DEADLINES
Applications must be submitted by February 1 online at uvic.ca/graduatestudies/

Applications received after the university’s deadline (February 1) may still be acceptable to the Department of Theatre, but with some limitations. September is the preferred start date, though January and May are possible as well.

Applicants who wish to be considered for a University of Victoria Fellowship (see above) must have completed their applications by December 31.
