Call for Participants:

Seminar Title: No Happy Endings: What can applied theatre really do?

Focus:
After reviewing significant historical examples of applied theatre and their impact, this seminar will invite Canadian theatre practitioners and researchers to review a wide range of recent theatre projects used for varied educational purposes, to address social justice/change, and/or to assist in the building of stronger communities. The seminar will focus on assessing the actual impact this type of work has on facilitators, participants and communities, so as to create more relevant and purposeful future applied theatre work and research.

List of issues and goals:
In this seminar we pose one question with which applied theatre practitioners have traditionally been reluctant to engage: What can applied theatre really do? This seminar aims to aid practitioners in the task of making realistic claims for their work, and toassist researchers in opening up avenues for pertinent inquiry in applied theatre.

Description of work required for participants:

 1. Submit a one-page overview of a completed or in-progress applied theatre project (DUE January 14th, 2013 to email address below)
 2. Read a background paper on seminar topic by Dr. Dobson, University Scholar in Applied Theatre, University of Victoria
 3. In March of 2013, participants will be sent a copy of all one-page project overviews to review in advance of the session.

In the session, participants will be asked to actively engage in discussion and assessment activities.
