>From "Appendix: Chronology of the Canadian Film Industry, 1893 - 1989", compiled by Rose-Aimée Todd, then Head of the Reference Library of the NFB, in "Canadian Film and Video, Vol. 2" by Loren Lerner (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1997.)

"[1918] George Brownridge establishes Adanac Producing Company to produce 'educational and industrial films'. However, 1919, with financial backing from the CPR, it will release THE GREAT SHADOW, a dramatic film about Bolsheviks trying to infiltrate a labour union."

It also itemizes that in 1916 " Toronto distributor and promoter establishes Canadian National Features in partnership with J.J. Shea of Buffalo and begins the construction of a studio in Trenton, Ontario, which will open in the spring of 1917. Two features will be shot there before bankruptcy is declared."

Based on Todd's source list, I suspect she got her information from "Embattled Shadows : a history of Canadian cinema, 1895-1939 " by Peter Morris (Montreal : McGill-Queen's University Press, 1978.)

Maybe this will help, David. Send my regards to Alex.

Martin

Subject: Old film "the great shadow"

My colleague, playwright Alex Poch Goldin sent out this request. I thought some of you might know a film scholar who might know:

"there is a Canadian film from 1919 I am looking to find a copy of. It is called The Great Shadow. It was shot in Trenton. It is about a Bolshevik insurgency in a Canadian railway union. Any tips regarding info or a copy of the film would be very appreciated."
