PRESS RELEASE

Equity in Theatre Partners
with Theatres Throughout Canada to Proudly Announce
the Equity Hackathon

For Immediate Release

(TORONTO, ON – February
18, 2015) Equity
in Theatre (EIT), in partnership with theatre companies and organizations throughout Canada, are proud
to announce the upcoming Equity Hackathon in
celebration of International Women’s Day. On March 8, 2015, EIT and its partners
will hold targeted “hackathons” throughout the nation to increase the online visibility of Canadian women in theatre.

A quick
online search of Canadian women
in theatre demonstrates their comparative absence
in the virtual world. There are fewer sites and “wikipages” designated to Canadian women’s
work compared to male
and American counterparts; consequently, there is less easily-accessible information, less notoriety, and less research
available, which may result in lower levels of support,
resources, and funding. In response to the lack of substantial information online about Canadian
women in theatre,
this International Women’s Day theatre companies and practitioners will join forces
to add online pages to wiki-sites on diverse women in the Canadian theatre
industry. The purpose
of the event is to increase the amount of information online
for Canadian women
in theatre.

Our partners
and hosts include,
but are not limited to: Gwaandak Theatre
(White Horse, Yukon); Intrepid
Theatre (Victoria, BC); Playwrights Guild of Canada
(Toronto, Ontario); Playwrights Theatre Centre (Vancouver, BC); Prairie Theatre
Exchange (Winnipeg, Manitoba); and the Women’s
Work Festival (St. John’s, Newfoundland). Those who are unable to attend a host event
in person are invited to register through our website
and join us virtually.
