Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Vision, Disability Studies, and the Arts

The School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design (AMPD) at York University, Toronto, invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in the area of Vision, Disability Studies, and the Arts. The successful candidate will be appointed to a tenure-track position in AMPD at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. One of North America's leading schools for the arts, AMPD offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Dance, Design, Computational Arts, Cinema and Media Arts, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts, Art History, and Theatre and Performance Studies. The successful candidate will be placed in a department that closely reflects his or her scholarly/creative strengths.

We seek a candidate who demonstrates excellence or emerging excellence in scholarship/research and teaching in disability studies and the arts, with a broad emphasis on vision and visuality. While we are particularly interested in candidates who specialize in disability and the arts, culture, media, and design, we also welcome candidates who demonstrate a breadth of knowledge and experience in critical disability studies from a range of disciplinary frameworks, such as public policy, law, labour studies, architecture, education, neuroscience, and health. The candidate must be able to work collaboratively across disciplines to develop new interdisciplinary approaches in disability studies and ideally become affiliated with York University’s Critical Disability Studies Program. The candidate’s research may also concentrate on a range of other topics, including but not limited to: youth and disability, race and disability, queer disability studies, global disability studies, cultural studies & disability, and disability advocacy/activism. The candidate must be widely conversant in key concepts, problems, and topics in contemporary disability research, and the candidate’s own research should work to reframe ablest cultural assumptions, elucidate the social complexities of disability experience, eliminate barriers and advance the civil and human rights of persons with disabilities, and pioneer new ways thinking about and theorizing disability.

At the time of appointment, the successful candidate must have a PhD, an outstanding record of research, experience working with undergraduate and graduate students, and be eligible for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The successful candidate must also be eligible for appointment to the core membership of York University’s Vision: Science to Application (VISTA) research program, a collaborative $120 million Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF, 2016-2023) supported research program that builds on York’s world-leading interdisciplinary expertise in biological and computer vision. As a VISTA member the candidate will benefit from the program funding and have the opportunity to provide leadership in fostering collaborative research, building the external funding base, supervising graduate students, and generating national and international academic, community and industry partnerships. The overarching goal of VISTA is to advance visual science through research that spans computational and biological perspectives and results in real-world applications. The appointed candidate will benefit from fundamental supports to vision science and exciting, widespread applications for visual health and technologies, and as a Canada Research Chair, the candidate will be offered significant teaching release to advance their program of research. More information about VISTA can be found at http://vista.info.yorku.ca/ <http://vista.info.yorku.ca/>
