THPERF 100 - Job Description - Winter 2022

The Theatre & Performance program, in the Department of Communication Arts, at the University of Waterloo is seeking a qualified sessional instructor for THPERF 100 - Introduction to Theatre. This course introduces students to the processes of text-based theatre creation and production. The instructor for this course will guide the students in an examination of five plays through text analysis, research, directorial conceptualization, design, rehearsal, production, and critical reflection. The instructor may choose the plays, and a broad range of approaches to, and interpretations of, these texts is encouraged.

This is a project-based course with a strong emphasis on group work. Interested applicants for this contract should be prepared to facilitate students in an applied, collaborative pedagogy. Finally, the instructor may choose to request the support of the Theatre and Performance program's faculty and staff, to aid the instruction of various production skills examined in the course (i.e.: design, directing, acting, and management).

All employees of the University of Waterloo who work on campus are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (see: https://uwaterloo.ca/coronavirus/).

THPERF 100 is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 - 2:20 p.m. in the winter 2022 term running from January 6 until April 3. There is an expectant enrollment of 60 students. With excellent facilities along with active and engaged undergraduate students, the Theatre and Performance program emphasizes the relationship between theory and practice in theatre study and creation. Sessional instructors are paid on a per-course basis at a standard rate determined by the university. Qualified candidates should have experience teaching at the university level, pedagogical commitments to experiential learning, and a record of teaching effectiveness.

Please send a brief statement of interest and a CV to the Associate Chair of the program: Dr. Andrew Houston - houston at uwaterloo.ca<mailto:houston at uwaterloo.ca>.
