<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Hello.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>I have recently been contracted to teach my first
Western Theatre History course at a conservatory style school. The course
is structured with 2 hours of lecture/week, and 8 hours of rehearsal/week (with
which to stage an application of the class research at the end of term).
In lecture, I plan to cover as much as I can of the historical context,
theatrical context, philosophical underpinnings, trends, etc. The students
will be required to research and present their research on the performance style
(movement, voice, actor process) and staging practice (theatre, set, lights,
costumes, sound, masks, etc.). As it is only a half course (Sept. to Dec.), it
will necessarily be a bare-bones survey of the entire history of western theatre
from ancient Greece to the present.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>I am looking to compile two different
bibliographies, probably with some overlap between them. First, a
bibliography of useful books, textbooks, articles, etc. with which to generate
lecture material. Second, a bibliography of up to date sources (or primary
sources) for the students to access when researching the areas of performance
style and staging practice.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Below is the reading list. Any sources
directly relating to the plays or original productions of the plays would be
ideal, but sources focussing on the larger movements are also
important.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV>
<P><STRONG>Oedipus the King, Everyman, Hamlet, The Misanthrope, The Tragic
Events, The Rover, Hernani, The Seagull, Ubu Roi, Waiting For Godot, Mother
Courage and her Children, Offending the Audience.</STRONG></P></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
