<DIV></DIV>>Canada's Preeminent Modern Dancer, Peggy Baker, Partners with University
<DIV></DIV>>of Calgary Dance Program
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>The internationally renowned dance artist, Peggy Baker, will be in
<DIV></DIV>>Calgary on November 21 to assist the University of Calgary's B.A. Dance
<DIV></DIV>>Program as it celebrates its first five years of existence as one of
<DIV></DIV>>only 6 dance degree programs in Canada. The dance program, which has
<DIV></DIV>>grown from 0 to 85 dance majors, is the only program between Toronto and
<DIV></DIV>>Vancouver and its presence in Calgary is changing the face of the
<DIV></DIV>>Calgary dance community. The U of C dance program is attracting
<DIV></DIV>>international attention through the work of its faculty members and it
<DIV></DIV>>is a very exciting time for the Calgary dance community.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>Baker shares the University of Calgary's dance program's vision for a
<DIV></DIV>>centre for dance research and performance that will support the growth
<DIV></DIV>>of dance locally and internationally. The centre will include the work
<DIV></DIV>>of choreographers and dancers, as well biomechanic researchers, exercise
<DIV></DIV>>physiologists, nutritionists and other health professionals, education
<DIV></DIV>>theorists, historians, videographers and dance writers. Such
<DIV></DIV>>integration will be unparalleled in the dance world and the proposed
<DIV></DIV>>centre will produce research that will change the way we think about
<DIV></DIV>>dancers.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>Ms. Baker will speak at a private reception and as a rare treat, she
<DIV></DIV>>will perform at the University Theatre at the preview of Dance Montage.
<DIV></DIV>>Baker, who grew up in Edmonton, danced on that stage over 30 years ago
<DIV></DIV>>when she was a student at the University of Alberta. At that time,
<DIV></DIV>>neither the university's of Calgary or Alberta had enough dance students
<DIV></DIV>>to fill an evening program, so they shared the program and traveled to
<DIV></DIV>>each other's cities. Baker remembers staying at the U of C's student
<DIV></DIV>>union in a sleeping bag on the floor. Dance Montage has been presenting
<DIV></DIV>>new choreography in Calgary since 1969.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>Baker began her career in 1974 as a founding member, and later artistic
<DIV></DIV>>director, of Dancemakers, (Toronto), where she participated in more than
<DIV></DIV>>50 premieres by Canadian choreographers. She toured internationally as
<DIV></DIV>>a prominent member of Lar Lubovitch’s celebrated New York company
<DIV></DIV>>throughout the eighties, joining Mikhail Baryshnikov and Mark Morris for
<DIV></DIV>>the inaugural season of their White Oak Dance Project in 1990. She is
<DIV></DIV>>the first Artist-in-Residence at Canada’s National Ballet School.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>Baker was awarded an Honourary Doctorate from the University of Calgary
<DIV></DIV>>in 2000 and since that time she has been awarded a three-year grant from
<DIV></DIV>>the George C.Metcalfe Foundation to undertake the documentation of her
<DIV></DIV>>repertoire. The documentation process will be recorded at the
<DIV></DIV>>University of Calgary during the spring of 2002/03/04 and the B.A. Dance
<DIV></DIV>>Program will become the repository of Baker's repertoire, a tremendous
<DIV></DIV>>honour for the dance program.
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>>Calgary's dance community will celebrate its recent growth at this
<DIV></DIV>>special occasion on November 21 as it looks forward to a very promising
<DIV></DIV>>future. There are a limited number of rush tickets available to the
<DIV></DIV>>performance that will be sold at the University Theatre box office on
<DIV></DIV>>November 21 at 19:30. Tickets: $5.00. For information about the event
<DIV></DIV>>please contact: Anne Flynn 403-220-7663.
