Since so many members of both the French and English theatre listservs took the time to offer their assistance to me, I would like to thank everyone and to let you know that the mystery about "H.W." appears to be solved.

The event in question was called "Les Deux Arts" and was held at Théâtre des Compagnons on Sunday, May 8 and Monday, May 9, 1949. Almost fifty-three years ago to the day, Françoise Sullivan joined forces with a young director, Alexander Kerby and his company, Theatre 6, to share an evening of dance and theatre. The programme was as follows: Black and Tan (choreography: Sullivan); Berceuse (choreography: Sullivan); Lucrèce (choreography: Sullivan and Racheed Aboud); Femme Archaïque (choreography: Sullivan); **intermission**; Theme in Four Colours (collaborators: Alexander Kerby, Fredrick Garbutt, Marilyn Petty, René Lemarquand, Kenneth Haslam and Bernice Robinson); **intermission**; Gothique (choreography: Sullivan); Au Bazar (Racheed Aboud); Dualité (choreography: Sullivan); and Deux Danses à Midi (choreography: Sullivan). The dance part of the evening contained character and narrative elements. Similarly Theatre 6 offered a Theme in Four Colours, in an attempt (as H.W. wrote) "to present a dramatic and intellectual idea mainly through the medium of movement." Claude Gauvreau translated the text of one of the sections, "Endless Grey," for Kerby’s Theme in Four Colours. Please note that a copy of the programme for Les Deux Arts is located in the Dance Collection Danse archive in Toronto.

This event was covered by both French and English newspapers in Montréal. As it turns out, "H.W." appears to be Harold Whitehead, the reviewer who succeeded Herbert Whittaker after Mr. Whittaker left Montréal. Apparently Mr. Whitehead signed his reviews using only his initials.

I am sure many people will find these details of minor importance to performance history in Montréal. To those who felt that they were significant enough to respond to my request, I offer my thanks.
