CTCA 2002 CRITIC’S SEMINAR ANNOUNCED

The Canadian Theatre Critics Association – the professional association for Canadian theatre critics, theatre writers and theatre editors – is pleased to announce that it will be holding its first national seminar on criticism at Toronto’s York University on Saturday, October 26th. Open to all working critics in the country, those who are interested in becoming critics and those who have a professional interest in the subject, the seminar will look at the question of who critics are actually writing for while examining the conditions under which theatre critics actually work.

The day-long session is being co-sponsored by York’s Department of Theatre, one of the few university programs in the country which has over the years offered courses in applied theatre criticism at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The morning session ( 10 to noon) will include opening remarks by a leading Canadian critic on the subject of “Criticism and the Art of Theatre” while the afternoon session (1:30 to 3:30) will have opening remarks by a major critic on the subject of “Criticism and the Theatre Audience.”

A panel of professional critics from different parts of the country and different media will take up the same questions as respondants to the opening remarks. Audience members will then have opportunities to question the speakers and share their own experiences. Names of specific speakers and panelists will be announced in the coming weeks.

Included in the seminar fee of $30 for CTCA members, working critics and students ($40 for the general public) will be the two professional panels, a buffet lunch with the speakers, and a reception at 3:45 p.m. offered by York’s Faculty of Fine Arts and hosted by Phillip Silver, the Dean of the Faculty and one of Canada’s leading theatre designers.

Coordinating the seminar is Don Rubin, CTCA co-president and founding editor of the Canadian Theatre Review, Editor of Routledge’s six-volume World Encyclopedia of Contemporary Theatre and former theatre critic for the Toronto Star, Maclean’s and CBC Radio.

Anyone interested in attending the CTCA seminar should contact Rubin by e-mail as soon as possible at the following address: drubin@yorku.ca. Registration cheques should be made payable to CTCA and sent to Critics Seminar, Department of Theatre, York University, Toronto, Ontario M3J 1P3.

Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: Click Here
