<P>FESTIVAL OF ORIGINAL THEATRE (F.O.O.T.) 2003 </P>
<P>March 6th – 9th, 2003 </P>
<P><BR>"Purging 20th Century Addictions: Toward a Different Theatre"<BR><BR>CALL
FOR PAPERS and SCRIPTS/PERFORMANCE PIECES<BR><BR>Due to recent world events,
concepts of intellectual freedom, cultural diversity and ideological difference
have become indispensable to the discourse of the new millennium. As 21st
century humanity continues to chart the expanse of its vast potential, its
theatre must likewise embark upon a process of investigation and critical
re-appraisal, both in terms of itself and its role in the wider community. To
what 20<SUP>th</SUP> century elements have we become too comfortably addicted?
What needs to be purged when constituting a new and different theatre? Through
content, comment or form, the possibility of a 21st century theatre demands that
we take a hard look at where we've been, where we want to<BR>go, and what needs
to change in order for us to get there. Under the theme "Purging 20th Century
Addictions: Toward a Different Theatre," the Festival of Original Theatre
(F.O.O.T.) 2003 (March 6th - 9th) will engage audiences and participants in
charting a new and necessary theatre for the 21st century - a theatre that is
reflective, innovative,<BR>diverse, and unafraid.<BR><BR>Showcasing original
works and innovative performance aesthetics, within a format of critical
exploration and discourse, the annual, student-run Festival of Original Theatre
is produced by the University of Toronto's Graduate Centre for Study of Drama.
F.O.O.T. 2003 will be comprised of both an academic conference and a short play
festival. </P>
<P>CALL FOR PAPERS:</P>
<P>The conference aspect of F.O.O.T. 2003 welcomes papers fitting under, or
relating to, the theme of "Purging 20th Century Addictions: Toward a Different
Theatre". Dealing with issues of both content (i.e. the politics of difference
in terms of race, gender, orientation, class, faith, nationalism, etc.) and form
(in terms of theory, practice and aesthetics), <I>the papers themselves may be
delivered through non-traditional modes of communication</I>. </P>
<P>Topics may include, but are in no way limited to:</P>
<UL>
<LI>Revolts against realism.</LI>
<LI>Reconfiguring theatrical space (i.e. the fourth wall).</LI>
<LI>A theatre that is reflective and inclusive of difference (i.e. race,
gender, sexuality, ideology, etc.).</LI>
<LI>Social and political obligations of theatre - does "art for art's sake"
still hold?</LI>
<LI>(Re-) Evaluating the role of the audience.</LI>
<LI>Theatre's place in a time of competing (multi-) media.</LI></UL>
<P>Submission Deadline: November 11, 2002<BR><BR>Proposal Format: No more than 1
page in length (include: Title, Author, Synopsis, Approximate time, Contact
info.).<BR>CALL FOR SCRIPTS/PERFORMANCE PIECES:<BR>The festival welcomes
original script and performance piece submissions from anywhere in the world
(but please be aware that we cannot provide funding assistance to cover travel
and accommodation costs). Also, please consider that the plays must be produced
with minimal production and technical values. Basic set pieces (i.e. acting
cubes, table, couch, etc.) will be supplied by the festival (there is limited
storage space), along with a basic lighting plot with the capacity for one
special per piece. Existing properties and costumes may be borrowed from the
Graduate Drama Centre’s holdings, and a minimal budget (approximately $50) will
be awarded to each piece to help defray additional costs. The event will be held
on (around?) a proscenium stage at the Robert Gill Theatre. Chosen pieces will
be assigned a director, or the playwright/creative team can provide a director
of her/his/their own choice. General auditions will be held to cast all of the
festival’s shows, should that be required. </P>
<P>Please submit three copies of a script, or a performance proposal (if the
work is in-progress, improvised, non-traditional, or so forth.), <I>no longer
than 15 minutes in length</I>. Also include a cover letter with contact
information, a brief bio, a list of your requirements (i.e. a director), and an
explanation of how the piece relates to the festival’s theme. Submissions will
not be returned unless accompanied by a self-addressed, postage-paid envelope.
</P>
<P>Submission deadline: December 2<SUP>nd</SUP>, 2002. </P>
<P>Selected entries will be notified during the first week of January 2003. </P>
