<p>The Graduate Centre for Study of Drama (U of T) is pleased to present,
<br><b>Shifting Tides: Atlantic Canadian Theatre – Yesterday, Today, and</b>
<br><b>Tomorrow.</b> The national conference will take place at the Drama
Centre,
<br>March 25th – 28th, 2004.
<p>Home to many of Canada’s most celebrated playwrights, theatre
<br>practitioners and scholars, Atlantic Canada has earned itself national
<br>and, increasingly, international acclaim for theatrical innovation
and
<br>artistic excellence. <i>Shifting Tides: Atlantic Canadian Theatre –</i>
<br><i>Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow</i> is the first national conference
<br>dedicated to exploring the multi-textured, complex and, singular
<br>artistic character of a region that is both the site of the nation’s
<br>oldest theatre and the space of burgeoning talents, ideas and
<br>innovations. By overcoming the physical, cultural and disciplinary
<br>boundaries between academics, practitioners and audiences, this
<br>celebration strives to increase the awareness of, and appreciation
for,
<br>the theatre of Atlantic Canada through artistic and intellectual
<br>exchange and exploration.
<p>Some of the most vital and progressive theatre companies from Canada’s
<br>East Coast will offer staged performances of their current projects,
as
<br>well as hands-on workshops for conference participants. Atlantic
<br>playwrights with national and international reputations will read from
<br>their works. Papers, panels, workshops and performances will deal with
<br>an array of issues that span the ongoing history of Canadian theatre
and
<br>breadth of its Atlantic Coast communities. <b>Andy Jones (</b>a videoconference
interview from Newfoundland) and Magnetic North Theatre Festival’s <b>Mary
Vingoe </b>will be delivering the conference keynote addresses. Plenary
presenters
<br>include <b>George Belliveau, Helen Peters, Patrick O’Neill </b>and
<b>Glen</b>
<br><b>Nichols.</b> Artistic presentations will include readings by <b>Robert
Chafe, Don Hannah, Wendy Lill, Bryden MacDonald, Melissa Mullen, Jenny
Munday, Charlie Rhindress, Kent Stetson, and Colleen Wagner</b> with
showcase pieces presented by companies <b>Artistic Fraud, Moncton Sable</b>
and <b>Zuppa Circus</b>. Additional presenters include <b>Anthony Black,
Jessie Maclean and Patrick Christopher</b> as well as <b>Tessa Mendel</b>.
