Canadian première of W.H. Auden’s <b style=""><i style="">PAID ON BOTH
SIDES: A CHARADE</i></b>,
directed by Michael J. Sidnell (<i style="">The Dog
Beneath the Skin</i> by Auden and Isherwood, Canadian premiere, Drama
Centre,
1978).</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><i style="">“The
village won’t stand it!”</i> Too controversial to be performed when
it was first written, Auden’s<span style=""> </span>“charade”
includes a collage of his earlier poems. Radically experimental in its<span
style=""> </span>dramatic language and use of medieval and
modernist dramatic forms, stoic in its philosophy, <b style=""><i
style="">PAID ON BOTH SIDES: A CHARADE</i></b>,
written and revised in 1928-29, still mesmerizes and disturbs. It also
demands
the “acrobatics, dancing, and all forms of physical skill” that Auden
insisted
on as “the basis of all acting.”</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><i style="">“Very
much a DC show!”</i> In keeping with the Drama Centre’s approach
to play production, <b style=""><i style="">PAID ON BOTH SIDES: A
CHARADE</i></b> explores theatricality and the
performative with a cast, crew and production team drawn almost
entirely from
Drama Centre students. Sound design and electronic and live performance
by <b style="">Dario Del Degan</b>. Original blues music
by <b style="">David Walmer</b>. Dance movement
arranged by <b style="">Sarah Nixon Gasyna</b>.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]--><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Best known as a great
modernist
poet, Auden wrote for the theatre throughout his career. The later
Auden was a
noted opera librettist (“last refuge of the High Style”), often
collaborating
with Chester Kallmann. His plays were all written early in his career,
mostly
in collaboration with Isherwood and for the London Group Theatre. They
remain
vital experiments in recovering old theatrical forms and embodying new
poetic
ones.</p>
