Started in 1993, the Festival of Original
Theatre (FOOT)
is an annual, student administered performance conference and arts
festival
sponsored by the Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama at the
University of
Toronto. Its goal is to bring together academia and the arts in
cross-disciplinary exploration and discussion. The structure of the
festival
combines academic conference papers, panel discussions, readings of
plays-in-progress and original performances of theatre.
This year’s theme, Performing Adaptation,
will involve artists and academics from across Canada, the United
States, and
Europe in questioning adaptation’s repositioning of narrative, image or
idea
from one artistic forum to another.

Adaptation will be taken up in
performance and discussion
by such prominent groups as Native Earth Theatre Company (Monique Mojica, Michelle St. John), fu-GEN
Theatre Company (banana boys),
DNA Theatre (David Duclos),
and Bluemouth Inc. (Richard
Wyndeyer). FOOT’s keynote address by
Linda Hutcheon and
papers by Alan Thomas, Tom Stroud and representatives from the Yale
School of
Drama will offer conference attendees scholars of an equally high
calibre,
ensuring vital and complementary exchanges for the festival’s duration.
