An Invitation from One Reed Theatre and Daniel Mroz

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I am writing to invite you to One Reed Theatre's new performance Nor The Cavaliers Who Come With Us, which will be playing at Toronto's Summerworks Festival this August.

One Reed Theatre was founded in the summer of 2005 by four recent graduates of the National Theatre School of Canada - Frank Cox O'Connell, Megan Flynn, Marc Tellez and Evan Webber - and myself. We came together with the desire to create original theatre that is physically dynamic, musically sophisticated and intellectually challenging.

The result is our new play, Nor The Cavaliers Who Come With Us, which tells the story of the conquest of Mexico through a contemporary Canadian tourist's quest for 'an intelligent source of evil in the world'.

While audiences in Montréal, Toronto and Ottawa have already seen our workshop versions of the performance, Nor The Cavaliers Who Come With Us premiered to great acclaim on July 21, 2006 at the Catskill Festival of New Theatre in Highland Lake, New York.

Here's what people have been saying about the piece:

'...intelligent, rigorous, moving, funny, and at times, thrilling. This is an exceptionally gifted and determined group of young artists, who have created a remarkably assured and complex piece of theatre.'

“I think of One Reed Theatre as a group of graceful conjurers. They accomplish that remarkable trick of making precise, rigorous, highly demanding performance appear effortless. They exhibit wit, insight, and intelligence beyond their years (as individuals and as a company) and animate complex ideas through a beguiling combination of lyrical movement, song, and word. Their work is fine visceral poetry, and as such it bespeaks skill, ability, and imagination through the erasure of exertion.”
Editor, Theatre Research in Canada

‘… it is stunning - everything that live theatre should be: original, questioning, arresting, and beautiful. This will be a company to watch for years to come.’

Slade Billew,
Artistic Director, Theatre of Operations (Richmond, Virginia, USA)

‘Nor The Cavaliers Who Come with Us is a strong new theatre performance that blends extreme physical precision with humour, terrific singing and wonderful four-sided boxing ring style set. What a beautiful first show for this new group.’
