<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-CA">The Graduate Centre for Study
of Drama is
pleased to present <b>Gwen Pharis Ringwood’s <i>Still Stands the House</i></b><span
 style=""> and<b> Susan Glaspell’s <i>Trifles</i>, </b>running
at the<b> Robert Gill Theatre </b>from <b>January 25<sup>th</sup> to
February 4<sup>th</sup></b></span>.
Written in the early part of the 20<sup>th</sup> century, the plays
offer us a
glimpse into the cruel realities of rural </span><st1:place><span
 lang="EN-CA">North America</span></st1:place><span lang="EN-CA">,
introducing us to two women whose
lives are as harsh and unforgiving as the land that they live on.<span
 style="">  </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-CA"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-CA">In <i>Still Stands the House</i>
we
encounter a bitter spinster, Hester Warren, whose grasp on reality has
become
tenuous.<span style="">  </span>Hester’s intense attachment to
the family home is threatened by her sister-in-law, and when it seems
that the
farm may be sold, Hester is forced to do the unthinkable.<span style=""> 
</span>Similarly disturbing, the female protagonists
of <i>Trifles</i> must clean up the unthinkable, as they uncover the
tragic
motive behind one woman’s crime, and decide to hide the evidence that
could
convict her.<span style="">  </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-CA"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-CA">These plays are works by
trail-blazing
women writers.<span style="">  </span>Gwen Pharis Ringwood was
a master of prairie folklore who created strong and moving female
characters
while exploring essential Canadian themes.<span style=""> 
</span>Her plays employ poetic language to examine human relationships
while
personifying the Canadian landscape as a force to be reckoned with.<span
 style="">  </span>A founding member of the Provincetown
Players, Susan Glaspell created a venue for fresh, new American works
while
writing plays that examined feminist issues and confronted gender
disparity.<span style="">  </span>One of the first
expressionistic playwrights in </span><st1:country-region><st1:place><span
 lang="EN-CA">America</span></st1:place></st1:country-region><span
 lang="EN-CA">,
Glaspell refused to conform to expectations based on sex or genre.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-CA"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-CA">Intimate, psychologically
complex and
emotionally compelling, these plays promise to provide a new
appreciation for
the ease of contemporary city life, not to mention modern security
systems.<b> </b><i>Still
Stands the House</i>, directed by <b>Lydia Wilkinson</b> and <i>Trifles</i>,
directed by <b>Amanda Lockitch</b> with Set Design by <b>Kelly Wolf</b>,
Lighting Design by <b>Aleksandra Podbereski</b>, Sound Design by <b>Mark
Turner</b>,
Costume Design by <b>Anusree Roy</b>, feature <b>Courtney Cauthon</b>,
<b>Robert
Fulton</b>, <b>Barbara Laing</b>, <b>Toby Malone</b>, <b>Trevor Pease</b>,
