to hear and meet H.S. Shivaprakash at the University of Toronto’s Robert Gill
Theatre on May 27.<span style=""> </span>Starting at 7pm, we
will present selected scenes from some of his plays; Shivaprakash will read
some of his poetry and talk about the current state of Indian drama. There will
be some time to mingle and meet as well. The evening’s proceedings will take
place in English.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: normal;"><b><span style="font-size: 12pt;">H.S. Shivaprakash</span></b><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> is one
of the leading poets and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playwright" target="_blank" title="Playwright"><span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none;">playwright</span></a>s writing in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kannada" target="_blank" title="Kannada"><span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none;">Kannada</span></a>,
with twelve plays, seven anthologies of poems, and several other books to his
credit. His works have been widely translated into English, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindi" target="_blank" title="Hindi"><span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none;">Hindi</span></a>,
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malayalam_language" target="_blank" title="Malayalam language"><span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none;">Malayalam</span></a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marathi_language" target="_blank" title="Marathi language"><span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none;">Marathi</span></a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamil_language" target="_blank" title="Tamil language"><span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none;">Tamil</span></a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telugu_language" target="_blank" title="Telugu language"><span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none;">Telugu</span></a>. His plays have been performed in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kannada_language" target="_blank" title="Kannada
language"><span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none;">Kannada</span></a>, Hindi, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manipuri" target="_blank" title="Manipuri"><span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none;">Manipuri</span></a>
and Malayalam. He is currently Dean of the School of Arts and Aesthetics at <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jawaharlal_Nehru_University" target="_blank" title="Jawaharlal Nehru University"><span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none;">Jawaharlal Nehru University</span></a> in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Delhi" target="_blank" title="New Delhi"><span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none;">New Delhi</span></a>.
>From 1996 to 2000 he was the editor of <i style="">Indian
Literature</i>, the bimonthly journal of the Sahitya Akademi in New Delhi. With
numerous awards bestowed upon his plays and writings, Shivaprakash is also a
well-known authority on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vachana" target="_blank" title="Vachana"><span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none;">Vachana</span></a> literature, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhakti_movement" target="_blank" title="Bhakti movement"><span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none;">Bhakti movements</span></a> of India, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sufi" target="_blank" title="Sufi"><span style="color: windowtext; text-decoration: none;">Sufi</span></a>
and other mystic traditions.<br style="">
