Berto is adding another feather to his Fringe cap this year, winning for the second time the Toronto Fringe New Play Contest with his new work A Singularity of Being. Roland Mathers (Clinton Walker) is a brilliant physicist consumed with unraveling Einstein’s Grand Unified Theory. When he develops a life-threatening, debilitating disease (ALS), Roland sacrifices his happiness on the altar of science. Loosely inspired by the life story of Steven Hawking, A Singularity of Being takes us into the mind of a genius and asks: “What price would you pay to see the face of God?”</font></div><div style="margin: 0px; font-family: Helvetica; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; min-height: 17px;"><br></div><div style="margin: 0px;"><font style="font-family: Helvetica; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;" size="4">Writing A Singularity of Being was a deeply personal experience for Berto. During the writing of this play, a very dear friend Berto had known since childhood contracted Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), the same disease that afflicts Stephen Hawking. A biologist by training, Berto was all too aware of the limitations of research to provide hope for his friend. "It was horrible to see someone you love, who was so fiercely independent, become trapped in their own body right before your eyes,” Berto says. “I found it extremely difficult to watch as the disease got worse, so much so that I was unable to be there for her in the end. I am grateful for this opportunity to pay tribute to her courage on the stage."
