<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';">Performance
History Seminar:<span> </span></span></b><b><span
style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';">The Ethical Challenges of
Performance History</span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';">Proposals
are invited for a seminar exploring the challenges of performance
history, as it relates to the ongoing research of participants.<span> </span>Like
earlier seminars at CATR/ARCT given under the title ‘Tyranny of
Documents,’ this session will explore the relationship between the
historian of performance and documentary evidence; but it will also
encourage participants to raise more general questions concerning
provenance, disciplinary and cross-disciplinary benefits and
challenges, and other issues that have arisen while conducting research.<span> </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';">The
focus this year will be on the ethical 'edges' of performance history,
including:<span> </span>the extent to which historians should be
advocates or 'mythbusters' regarding their subjects; the challenges of
representing oppressed individuals and groups of all kinds in the study
of history; the blessings and temptations of filling in gaps in the
evidence with imaginative speculation; among many other challenges.<span> </span>The
organizer welcomes proposals in other areas of its general subject and
mandate; the topic is meant to provide direction for discussion.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';">Participants
will submit ‘working papers’ exploring a challenge they are facing in
their ongoing research, along with documents if appropriate, all of
which will be posted to a secure website in advance of the conference
for viewing by participants and registrants.<span> </span>We will
assign respondents to each, and organize the session as a series of
related research questions.<span> </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman';">We
encourage proposals from graduate students, scholars early in their
careers, and seasoned veterans.<span> </span>The area of research is
not restricted to a particular time or place.<span> </span>Explorations
of the challenges in discussing any area of drama, theatre and
performance studies will be welcome.<span> </span>A goal of this
year's seminar is to explore the prospect of an ongoing, year-round
working group within CATR/ACRT on performance history.</span></p>

<p class="TableContents"><span lang="EN-CA">Appel à contributions pour
le séminaire de recherche « <b>Les enjeux éthiques de l'histoire de la
performance </b>». Cette session thématique se tiendra dans le cadre de
la conférence annuelle de l'ACRT à l'Université de Victoria du 1<sup>er</sup> au
4 juin 2013.<br>

Nous invitons les chercheures et chercheurs dont le projet de recherche
en cours porte sur l'histoire de la performance ( c'est-à-dire du
spectacle vivant) à soumettre des propositions qui témoignent des
enjeux de leur discipline. Comme ce fut le cas par le passé pour les
séminaires de l'ACRT regroupés sous le titre « Tyranny of documents »,
le séminaire « Les enjeux éthiques de l'histoire de la performance »
examinera la relation entre les historiens du spectacle et leurs
sources documentaires. Les participants sont invités à poser des
questions d'ordre général sur la provenance des documents qu'ils
étudient, sur les avantages et les obstacles d'une approche
disciplinaire et interdisciplinaire, et sur les défis auxquels ils sont
confrontés dans le cadre de leurs recherches.</span></p>
<p class="TableContents"><span lang="EN-CA">Cette année, l'accent sera
mis sur l'éthique de l'histoire du spectacle vivant et sur ses «
limites ».<span> </span>Jusqu'où l'historien devrait-il aller pour
défendre ou démystifier son sujet de recherche ? Comment devrait-il
representer les individus ou les groupes d'individus victimes
d'oppression dans son travail ? Bienfait ou malédiction :
qu'arrive-t-il lorsque l'historien y va d'hypothèses de son cru pour
combler les lacunes du matériel disponible ? Les organisateurs de la
session invitent des contributions couvrant plusieurs domaines ; la
thématique de la session guidera la discussion.<span> </span></span></p>
<p class="TableContents"><span lang="EN-CA">Le mode de discussion du
séminaire sera privilégié. C'est-à-dire que les participants
soumettront d'abord leurs textes aux organisateurs de la session. Au
besoin, ces textes pourront être accompagnés d'autres documents à
l'appui. Le tout sera sauvegardé sur un site web sécurisé qui sera
accessible aux autres participants ainsi qu'aux observateurs inscrits
au séminaire avant la conférence. Chaque texte sera ensuite assigné à
des répondants. Finalement, la session se déroulera telle une période
de questions portant sur les projets de recherche des participants.</span></p>
<p class="TableContents"><span lang="EN-CA">Les propositions
d'étudiants postgradués, de chercheurs en début de carrière et de
chercheurs d'expérience sont les bienvenues. Le sujet des contributions
n'est pas confiné à une seule époque, culture ou discipline. Les
propositions dans le domaine des arts de la scène, de la littérature
dramatique et des « Performance Studies », par exemple, seront
considérées. Un des objectifs de la session sera d'étudier la
possibilité de former un groupe de travail sur l'histoire du spectacle
vivant qui se réunira chaque année à la conférence de l'ACRT.</span></p>
<p class="TableContents"><span lang="EN-CA">Toute proposition doit
inclure un résumé d'environ 250 mots ainsi qu'une note biographique.
