Seminar:<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>'The Challenge of Setting
Boundaries'</b></p><p class="MsoNormal">Proposals are invited for a seminar exploring the challenges
of performance history, as it relates to the ongoing research of
participants.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Like earlier
seminars at CATR/ARCT, including last year's Performance History Seminar, this
session will explore the relationship between the historian of performance and
documentary evidence; but it will also encourage participants to raise more
general questions concerning provenance, disciplinary and cross-disciplinary
benefits and challenges, and other issues that have arisen while conducting
research.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal">One focus this year will be on the challenges we face when
setting boundaries in archival research, its interpretation, and in the writing
of a history--'boundaries' broadly defined as a line that distinguishes--that <i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">draws a line around</i>--individuals,
communities, territories, nations, classes, races, sexualities, as well as
bodies of evidence, methodologies, genres, and disciplines.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Submissions may engage with the
'boundaries' of their own primary archival research, asking when we should
'draw the line' and search no more, writing our histories from what we have in
hand.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>They may interrogate the
disciplinary boundaries of our aggressively interdisciplinary work, questioning
the extent to which we can productively import and co-mingle methods of inquiry
developed specifically for one kind of study into another.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Participants may explore the necessity,
often against our better judgment, to impose homogeneity on a group, to
generalize in order to write a comprehensible history.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal">Potential participants may examine the call for proposals on
the website for further ideas, and are encouraged to think about the Congress
theme--and the word 'boundaries'--in considering their proposals.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>To be clear, however, we also welcome
proposals that do not directly address this theme; it is merely meant to
provide direction for discussion.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal">Participants will submit ‘working papers’ by April 15, 2014,
exploring a challenge they are facing in their ongoing research, along with
documents if appropriate, all of which will be posted to a password-protected,
secure website in advance of the conference for viewing by participants and
registrants.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>We will divide
participants into groups for on-line discussion, assign respondents, and
organize the conference session as a series of related research questions for
discussion.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Papers will not be
read during the seminar, but will act as pretexts for conversation.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal">We encourage proposals from graduate students, scholars
early in their careers, and seasoned veterans.<span style="mso-spacerun:
yes"> </span>The area of research is not restricted to a particular time
or place.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Explorations of the
challenges in discussing any area of drama, theatre and performance studies

</b>»</p><p class="TableContents">Nous invitons les chercheures et chercheurs dont le
projet en cours porte sur l'histoire du spectacle vivant à soumettre des
propositions qui témoignent des enjeux de leur recherche. Comme ce fut le cas
par le passé, notamment pour le s<span style="mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">é</span>minaire
d'histoire du spectacle l'ann<span style="mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">é</span>e
derni<span style="mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">è</span>re au CATR/ARCT,
le séminaire « <b>Le d</b><b><span style="mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">é</span>fi
de tracer des fronti</b><b><span style="mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">è</span>res
</b>» examinera la relation entre les historiens du spectacle et leurs sources
documentaires. Nous encourageons aussi les participants à poser des questions
d'ordre plus général sur la provenance des documents qu'ils étudient, sur les
avantages et les obstacles d'une approche disciplinaire et interdisciplinaire,
et sur les défis auxquels ils sont confrontés dans le cadre de leurs
recherches.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Cette ann<span style="mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">é</span>e,
l'accent sera mis sur les d<span style="mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">é</span>fis
auxquels nous faisons face lorsque vient le moment de tracer des fronti<span style="mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">è</span>res dans notre travail,
soit lors de recherches dans les archives, au moment d'interpr<span style="mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">éter des documents, ou pendant
l'étape d'écriture d'un travail en histoire. Par </span>«
frontières », nous entendons toute ligne qui sépare et distingue des pays, des
individus, des communautés, des territoires, classes sociales, races et
indentités sexuelles. Dans le cadre du séminaire, « frontière » désigne aussi
la ligne qui circonscrit une méthodologie de recherche, un corpus, une
discipline et un genre spectaculaire. Les propositions peuvent aborder, par
exemple, les limites qu'on se donne pendant le travail de recherche. Quand
doit-on arrêter la recherche documentaire et commencer à écrire? Les
propositions peuvent aussi examiner les emprunts que nous faisons à différentes
disciplines dans le cadre de recherches de plus en plus interdisciplinaires.
Jusqu'où peut-on emprunter à d'autres domaines tout en demeurant productif? Les
participants peuvent aussi se pencher sur la nécessité – parfois contre notre
meilleur jugement – d'imposer une certaine homogénéité à des groupes et d'y

demeure toutefois une suggestion, et nous prendrons en consid<span style="mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">é</span>ration les propositions
n'y <span style="mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">é</span>tant pas
directement reli<span style="mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">é</span>es.</p><p class="TableContents">Les participants devront d'abord soumettre leurs textes
aux organisateurs de la session. La date limite de soumission des textes est le
<b>15 avril 2014</b>. Au besoin, ces textes pourront être accompagnés d'autres
documents à l'appui. Le tout sera sauvegardé sur un site web sécurisé utilisant
un mot de passe. Ce site sera accessible aux autres participants ainsi qu'aux
observateurs inscrits au séminaire avant la conférence. Les organisateurs du s<span style="mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">é</span>minaire s<span style="mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">é</span>pareront ensuite les
participants en groupes de travail pour des discussions en ligne. Chaque texte
sera finalement assigné à des répondants. Le s<span style="mso-bidi-font-family:
"Times New Roman"">é</span>minaire se déroulera telle une période de questions
portant sur les projets des participants. Veuillez noter que les participants
ne liront pas leurs textes durant le s<span style="mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"">é</span>minaire.

de pistes de discussions.</p><p class="TableContents">Les propositions d'étudiants postgradués, de chercheurs
en début de carrière et de chercheurs d'expérience sont les bienvenues. Le
sujet des contributions n'est pas confiné à une seule époque, culture ou
discipline. Les propositions dans le domaine des arts de la scène, de la
littérature dramatique et des « Performance Studies », par exemple, sont les
bienvenues.</p><p class="TableContents">Toute proposition doit inclure un résumé d'environ 250
