Anglophone population, Montréal is the second largest French-speaking city after Paris. North America’s number one choice for international events and festivals, Montréal was the first metropolis to be designated a UNESCO City of Design by the Global Alliance
for Cultural Diversity. Nestled in the heart of this pulsing city, embraced by a dynamic research university, the Faculty of Fine Arts benefits from extraordinary access to brilliant practitioners, thriving venues, cross-cultural perspectives, and an extensive

(ACTT), and Design for the Theatre (DFTT). The Specialization in Design for the Theatre program invites students to become actively involved in the complex process of conceiving, communicating and realizing the visual framework for theatrical works. Emphasis
is placed on design as a highly creative discipline comprised of a number of specialties including set, costume, lighting and props design. Designers possess a firm grasp of the potential for each constituent part while understanding many other aspects of
production. Through an involvement in the imaginative and technical aspects of the various streams of theatre design, group projects, and individual portfolio development, students in DFTT begin by understanding the history of theatre design and the cooperative
nature of theatre work. They progress from exploring the essence of the design process to developing more refined insights and skills. Senior students work on advanced individual projects, with opportunities to design for departmental public performance projects,
providing them with a rich understanding of the role designers play in contemporary theatre.
