<span style="font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">The omnipresence of stereotypes in the age of global migration is increasingly evident both at the level of governing structures and in everyday practices.</span>
<span style="font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">In the context of migration, both historically and today, the use of stereotypes to characterize the migrant – whether it be as a figure of suffering or a source of danger - can influence,
polarize, and even radicalize public opinions and discourses. The influence of social media and political narratives, as well as literature and the arts, can be both productive and dangerous when it comes to our evaluation of a new migrant, refugee, asylum
seeker, or exile as a neighbour, business partner, colleague, or friend. This is especially true in a world of increasing global conflicts and terrorism, neoliberal markets, and newly emerging nationalist agendas. This international, interdisciplinary, and
bilingual conference aims to address the questions of the (ab)use of stereotypes when it comes to the representation of migration and refugees in various public discourses, both historically, conceptually and practically.

mouvements migratoires mondiaux auxquels nous assistons depuis quelques années ont provoqué une résurgence de l’usage de stéréotypes découlant « d’idées reçues » ou « d’évidences » (Pavis), tant dans les discours médiatiques, politiques ou gouvernementaux
que dans les pratiques de la vie quotidienne. Dans le contexte historique et actuel de la migration, l’emploi de stéréotypes dans la représentation du migrant, notamment comme objet de pitié ou source de danger, peut influencer, polariser, voire même radicaliser
les opinions et les discours publics. Le rôle que jouent les médias sociaux et les énoncés politiques, mais aussi la littérature et les arts, dans la diffusion des stéréotypes peut être soit positif soit dangereux lorsqu’il s’agit d’évaluer le migrant, le
réfugié, le demandeur d’asile, l’exilé ou le voyageur en tant que voisin, partenaire aux affaires, collègue, ou ami, c’est-à-dire en tant que membre du corps social. Ce colloque international, interdisciplinaire et bilingue a pour objet les enjeux conceptuels
et pratiques de l’utilisation, abusive ou non, des stéréotypes à l’endroit des migrants et des réfugiés dans les divers discours historiques, publics et artistiques.</span></p>
