Dear members,<br>
<br>
We write with the sad news of Jean Cléo Godin's passing. He was a founding member of the Société québécoise d'études théâtrales (SQET) and its president from 1977 to 1981. In 2009, the SQET honoured his research contributions by naming him an honorary member,
alongside his collaborator Laurent Mailhot. On this occasion, Gilbert David paid them hommage, saying: "Their contribution to knowledge on the poetics of playwrights and to the discussion of the relationship between theatre and society should be marked as
a milestone." Jean Cléo Godin's publications are also found in SQET's journal, <i>
L'Annuaire théâtral</i>.<br>
<br>
Professor Godin was also a founding member of the Canadian Association for Theatre Reserach (CATR), where he was instrumental in creating a national, bilingual association and cultivating a close relationship between CATR and the SQET. In the CATR newsletter
of 1977 (when CATR was the Association for Canadian Theatre History), the president, Ross Stuart, thanks professor Godin for being a "warm and friendly liaison" between the two new scholarly associations. Stephen Johnson (CATR president 2012-2016) remembers
him as a "kind and supportive statesman."<br>
<br>
Jean Cléo Godin played an important role in the foundation of <i>Theatre Research in Canada</i> (at the time,
<i>Theatre History in Canada</i>) as a member of the first editorial board. In 1989, CATR recognized his contributions to Quebec theatre history by naming the annual prize for the best essay in French on Canadian theatre after him.<br>
<br>
In his publications, editorial efforts, and as a regular speaker at the conference of the International Federation for Theatre Research, Professor Godin diffused research on Canadian and Quebecois theatre internationally. For instance, as a member of the editorial
team on the <i>Oxford Companion to Canadian Theatre</i>, he assured the representation of Quebec theatre in its pages.<br>
<br>
We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Jean Cléo Godin.<br>
