The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our professional and personal lives, deeply affecting every member of our organizations and our field in general. Theatre and performance, both in practice and academia, now face existential threats. As we continue to adapt
to the new realities of a COVID-19 world and post COVID-19 world, one thing is certain: industry-wide transformation is imminent. Survival and adaptation constitute the adopted mode of life and work in 2020/21. What lies ahead is unclear but will definitely
be new. As Patrick Duggan and Lisa Peschel suggest in <em>Performing (for) Survival: Theatre, Crisis, Extremity</em> (2017), “The notion of a ‘new reality’ is particularly important … suggesting that creative processes can provide modes of engagement that
might facilitate, or at least point towards, different ways to experience the present and future beyond the contemporary crisis” (4-5). This year’s theme for the joint CATR-SQET conference, Crisis and Recovery, invites us to understand the current moment through
reflections from our varied fields of research and practice. This theme is an incitement to think collectively about the nature and challenge of crisis and the possibilities and legacies of recovery. We invite you to consider our present, but also our past,
and to speculate about futures unknown.<br>
<br>
The organizers of CATR-SQET 2021 invite conference participants to explore the theme in its broadest possible scope. Possible topics for exploration include, but are not limited to:</span></span></h1>

<strong>CONFERENCE FORMAT: </strong><br>
<strong>CATR-SQET 2021 will be held online</strong>: this decision was not easy to make. We all know how important it is for us to meet in person and to generate new friendships and partnerships over a conversation or on a stroll. But we also care about the
safety of our membership and sustainability of the event. To take advantage of the virtual environment in which the 2021 conference will necessarily be held, to capitalize on our scholarly community’s range of research interests, and to collectivize the efforts
of mounting an annual conference during a pandemic, “Crisis and Recovery” will be held in an organizationally decentralized and temporally
<strong><u>distributed “relay” format</u></strong>. <br>
<br>
Between <strong>June 10 and July 10, 2021</strong> three distinct yet dialogic “legs” or “stages” of the conference-relay will convene CATR and SQET members for a maximum of two days each of presentations, discussions, and other forms of engagement.
<strong>The dates of each leg will be finalised in January 2021. </strong><br>
Each stage or event-cluster will be curated by the conference programming committee, housed within a digital infrastructure provided by CATR, and hosted by one of the following three partners: University of Ottawa, University of Manitoba, and the Société québécoise
d’études théâtrales. All conference legs will be open to all conference-registrants. <br>
<br>
Local host responsibilities include: participating in the conference programming selection; scheduling and managing events in their conference-leg; offering advice and assistance to the conference committee; and providing technical and logistical support for
the same. Each host will also prepare a “baton” in whatever transferrable format they deem most appropriate to their leg to pass on to the next host, to be incorporated into the next leg’s programming and reflections.<br>

<strong>Curated Paper Panels and Round Tables (90 min)</strong><br>
Proposals are invited from prospective organizers for curated paper panels or roundtables on any topic related to theatre, performance, dance, and drama that is Canadian, Québécois or international in scope. Prospective organizers are asked to submit a 250-word
proposal, which should include the title of the panel, a scholarly rationale, a brief description of who will be the participants, and how the panel will be structured. The proposal should specify the title and focus of the panel along with a short list of
presenters and perspectives of the proposed discussion. <br>
<br>
<strong><u>Working Groups</u></strong>. Leaders of the Working Groups are invited to contact the conference organizers by
<strong>December 1, 2020</strong> to indicate the needs for the meeting of their groups. <br>

<strong><u>Specific to CATR-SQET 2021:</u></strong><strong> We welcome suggestions for alternative means of digital engagement</strong>,<strong> such as video essays, alternative online meeting forums, video game interventions, etc.</strong> Online praxis workshops

<strong>FUTURE OF THE CATR ANNUAL CONFERENCE:</strong><br>

<u>Since the situation of the 2020 Pandemic continues to be unprecedented</u>, the CATR Board of directors would like to take a moment to communicate to the Membership our perspective on what we perceive to be a threat to the future of the conference. Obviously,
right now we are dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, and its limitations on our activities, but the threat we perceive has longer term implications. The conference is currently experiencing a crisis of labour. Producing the conference is a massive undertaking
that requires a huge investment of volunteer time, energy, and labour from its organizer(s) and their affiliated institution(s). In the last ten years, the event has grown in scale, which has made it successful in realizing many of the Membership’s goals,
but this growth has also made it an increasingly daunting event to produce. Also, in the last ten years, the demographics of our organization have shifted in line with major trends in academia. Many of our newer members lack the secure institutional affiliation
necessary to produce a conference, as well as the allotment of time dedicated to the requirement of service that comes with tenure and tenure-stream appointments. Many of our more longstanding members have already dedicated significant chunks of their time
to producing past conferences. Thus, we are facing a situation where CATR’s volunteer labour capacity is dwindling and we have little registered interest from the membership in producing future conferences. Solving this problem for the long term and creating
a new, sustainable model for the conference will take the combined intelligence and creativity of the Membership. In the next year we will be looking to hear from you more on this issue, and we will be providing a number of mechanisms through which we may
receive your perspectives and ideas.<br>

La pandémie de COVID-19 a changé nos vies professionnelles et personnelles, touchant profondément chaque membre de nos associations et notre domaine dans son ensemble. À la fois dans la pratique et dans le milieu universitaire, le théâtre et la performance
font face à des menaces existentielles. Alors que nous nous adaptons aux nouvelles réalités de notre monde à l’heure de la COVID-19 et de l’après-COVID-19, une chose est certaine : la transformation de l’ensemble de l’industrie est imminente. La survie et
l’adaptation caractérisent le nouveau mode de vie et de travail en 2020-2021. Ce qui nous attend n’est pas clair, mais sera assurément nouveau. Comme le suggèrent Patrick Duggan et Lisa Peschel dans
<em>Performing (for) Survival : Theatre, Crisis, Extremity</em> (2017), « La notion d’une “nouvelle réalité” est particulièrement importante… suggérant que les processus créatifs peuvent offrir des modes d’engagement qui pourraient faciliter, ou au moins indiquer,
différentes façons de vivre le présent et le futur au-delà de la crise contemporaine » (4-5). Le thème du colloque conjoint de la SQET-ACRT de cette année, Crise et relance, nous aidera à comprendre la période actuelle à partir de nos différents domaines de

<strong>L</strong><strong>e colloque conjoint de la SQET-ACRT 2021 se tiendra en ligne ;
</strong>cette décision n’a pas été facile à prendre. Nous savons toutes et tous à quel point il est important de nous rencontrer en chair et en os, de nouer de nouvelles amitiés et de créer de nouveaux partenariats lors d’une conversation ou d’une promenade.
Toutefois, nous nous préoccupons aussi de la sécurité de nos membres et de la pérennité de l’événement. Afin de profiter de l’environnement virtuel dans lequel se tiendra nécessairement le colloque de 2021, de capitaliser sur les divers intérêts de recherche
de notre communauté universitaire et de collectiviser les efforts requis pour concocter notre événement annuel pendant la pandémie, le colloque « Crise et relance » se tiendra dans une
<strong>formule « à relais », </strong>décentralisé sur le plan organisationnel et réparti dans le temps.<br>
<br>
Entre le <strong>10 juin et le 10 juillet 2021</strong>, trois « phases » distinctes, mais dialogiques de la conférence « à relais » réuniront les membres de la SQET et de l’ACRT pendant un maximum de deux jours chacune ; elles incluront des présentations,
des discussions et diverses formes d’échanges. <strong>Les dates de chaque phase seront déterminées en janvier 2021.</strong><br>
<br>
Chaque phase ou groupe d’événements sera organisé par le comité du programme du colloque, sur une infrastructure numérique fournie par l’ACRT et hébergée par un des trois partenaires suivants : l’Université d’Ottawa, l’Université du Manitoba ou la Société
québécoise d’études théâtrales. Toutes les personnes inscrites au colloque pourront participer à toutes les phases.<br>
<br>
Les responsabilités des hôtes incluent la participation au choix de la programmation du colloque ainsi que l’établissement des horaires et la planification des événements dans leur phase respective du colloque. Ils pourront donner leur avis, de l’aide ainsi
que du soutien technique et logistique au comité organisateur. Chaque hôte préparera aussi un « témoin », d’une forme appropriée à sa phase, afin de le transmettre à l’hôte suivant, qui devra l’incorporer dans la programmation et les réflexions de sa phase.<br>

<strong>Séances et tables rondes préprogrammées (90 min.)</strong><br>
Nous invitons les personnes intéressées à organiser une séance ou une table ronde sur tout sujet de portée québécoise, canadienne ou internationale relié au théâtre, à la performance, à la danse et à l’art dramatique à soumettre leurs propositions. Ces dernières
doivent compter 250 mots et inclure le titre de la séance, une justification scientifique, une brève description des personnes qui y participeront et la structure du panel. Les propositions doivent préciser le titre et le sujet de la séance, lister les conférencières
et conférenciers et décrire les points qui seront abordés lors des échanges.<br>

<strong><u>Groupes de travail et axes de recherche.</u></strong> Les responsables des groupes de travail sont invités à communiquer avec les organisateurs du colloque au plus tard le 1<sup>er</sup> décembre 2020 afin d’indiquer ce dont ils ont besoin pour les
rencontres de leurs groupes.<br>

<strong><u>Pour le colloque de la SQET-ACRT :</u></strong> <strong>Nous acceptons volontiers les suggestions de moyens alternatifs d’engagement numérique, tels que les essais vidéo, les forums de rencontre alternatifs en ligne, les interventions dans les jeux

<strong>L’AVENIR DU COLLOQUE DE L’ACRT</strong><br>

Bien que la situation de la pandémie de 2020 soit sans précédent, les membres du conseil d’administration de l’ACRT souhaitent prendre un moment pour faire part aux membres d’une autre menace qui plane sur l’avenir du colloque. Il est évident qu’en ce moment,
nous sommes confrontés à la pandémie de COVID-19 et aux limites qu’elle nous impose pour la tenue de nos activités. Toutefois, la menace que nous percevons pourrait avoir des implications à plus long terme. Le colloque connaît actuellement un problème important
de main-d’œuvre. L’organisation du colloque est une entreprise de grande envergure qui repose beaucoup sur le bénévolat et qui requiert un investissement énorme en temps et en énergie de la part de son ou de ses organisateurs et de leurs institutions.<br>
<br>
Au cours des dix dernières années, l’événement a pris de l’ampleur, ce qui lui a permis d’atteindre un bon nombre des objectifs identifiés par les membres, mais cette croissance en a également fait un événement de plus en plus difficile à organiser. En outre,
au cours des dix dernières années, la démographie de notre organisation a évolué en fonction des grandes tendances du monde universitaire. Plusieurs de nos nouveaux membres n’ont pas d’affiliation institutionnelle stable ni de temps pour planifier un tel événement,
car ils ne bénéficient pas des mêmes conditions de travail que les professeurs ayant des postes menant à la permanence ou des postes permanents. Beaucoup de nos membres les plus anciens ont déjà consacré une grande partie de leur temps à l’organisation des
colloques précédents. Ainsi, nous sommes confrontés à une situation difficile : le recours au travail bénévole ne fonctionne plus et les membres ne manifestent que peu d’intérêt pour la planification d’un tel événement. Pour résoudre ce problème à long terme
et créer un nouveau modèle viable pour le colloque, il faudra faire appel à l’intelligence et à la créativité de nos membres. Au cours de la prochaine année, nous aimerions savoir ce que vous pensez sur cette question. Nous mettrons donc en place un certain
nombre de mécanismes qui nous permettront de connaître vos points de vue et vos idées.<br>
