          work of William <span
            style="font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif">Shakespeare</span> created
          between 1589 and 1613 has for many represented the apex of
          text-based performance and stagecraft in the Western world for
          hundreds of years. The "system", an approach to acting
          developed by Russian actor, director and teacher Constantin <span
            style="font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif">Stanislavsky</span> during
          the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, can be seen
          as the oxygen that contemporary theatre artists breathe in
          training, rehearsal and performance. Is it possible for us to
          find ways for our modern, naturalistic tradition of acting
          based in <span style="font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif">Stanislavsky</span>'s
          "system" to address the particular demands of <span
            style="font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif">Shakespeare</span>?
          How might we as scholars, practitioners, teachers and
          performers-in-training develop accessible and inclusive
          approaches to these "two traditions" of Western performance
          for the twenty-first century? </div>

          one of the series of books to be published by Routledge under

          …" that focuses on the legacy and teaching of Konstantin <span
            style="font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif">Stanislavsky</span> in
          the context of major contemporary themes and creative
          /performance genres. </div>

          a collaborative international research project with partners
          in the UK, Europe, USA and Australia. Founded by Bella Merlin
          and Paul Fryer, the project explores the legacy of <span
            style="font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif">Stanislavsky</span>'s
          work within a contemporary context. The S Word is supported by
          The <span style="font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif">Stanislavsky</span> Research
          Centre, co-hosted by the University of Leeds and the
